LINCOLN, Neb. (11/7/09) - The seventh-ranked Arkansas State women's bowling team finished the final day of competition at the Big Red Invitational at 4-1 and took second place with a total pinfall of 12,562 over the three-day tournament.
"The first day of this tournament really hurt us," said ASU head coach Justin Kostick. "But the girls are really coming together as a team, and we've had a great start this year."
The Red Wolves won their first three matches of the day 900-889 over No. 2 Vanderbilt, 972-907 over top-ranked Nebraska and 940-857 over No. 20 Valparaiso. ASU fell to Minnesota State-Mankato 985-911 but bounced back to top Prairie View A&M 1,026-701 in the last match of the tournament.
Tournament standings were based on total pinfall, and Central Missouri took the title with 12,646 total pins.
Two Red Wolves were named to the all-tournament team, including sophomore Samantha Santoro who finished third and freshman Rachael Gittings who finished fifth.
"This tournament was a good experience for our team," said Gittings. "We struggled in the middle, but we came together when we really need to."
Arkansas State will be back in action Nov. 20-22 at the UMES Hawks Classic in Millsboro, Dela.
