JONESBORO, Ark. (5/23/2013) — Arkansas State pitcher Daniel Wright has been named the Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Year by College Sports Madness the website announced Thursday morning.
The senior from Bartlett, Tenn., has been among the league leaders in innings pitched, strikeouts, strikeouts looking, earned run average and pickoffs during the 2013 season. Wright, who was also named as an All-Sun Belt First-Team Conference selection by the website, recently tossed eight innings in the Red Wolves' opening round game of the SBC Baseball Tournament.
Wright is the league leader in innings pitched with 110 1/3 on the year, ranks fourth in ERA with a 3.18 mark, second in opposing batting average at .224, second in strikeouts with 96 and is tied for second in batters struck out looking with 30.
Wright has gone at least seven innings in his last nine games and also has nine quality starts on the season. In his last 26 innings he has retired the side in order 11 times and has gone the distance in his last three starts.
He earned Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week honors on April 8 after picking up a save and a win in the previous week. Wright picked up his first save since 2011 when he recorded the final three outs in a home game against Southeast Missouri and then went out just three days later and tossed the first complete-game shutout of his career in a 6-0 victory over Western Kentucky. He struck out a career-high 11 batters, yielded just five hits and did not allow a runner past second base during the game. Wright also retired 12 straight in the game at one point.
Wright is the second straight A-State pitcher to earn pitcher of the year honor from College Sports Madness after Jacob Lee took home the honor in 2012.
