A-State Football Conducts 2016 Pro Day

JONESBORO, Ark. (4/5/16) – The Arkansas State football team held its annual Pro Day Tuesday morning at Student Activity Center, and nine former Red Wolves were put through various tests and drills by several National Football League (NFL) representatives as the 2016 NFL Draft approaches.

Seven seniors on the 2015 team, including wide receivers Tres Houston, Booker Mays and J.D. McKissic, along with defensive back Rocky Hayes, tight end Darion Griswold, Fredi Knighten, who worked out as a wide receiver, and punter Luke Ferguson were all present. Former A-State defensive end Jabari Mathieu and defensive back Sterling Young also worked out, as did former Red Wolves' and UAPB defensive back Kyle Coleman. McKissic was a 2015 First Team All-Sun Belt Conference selection, while Houston and Knighten were second-team picks. Griswold was a third-team all-conference selection as well.

The Red Wolves have seen a player taken in the NFL Draft in eight of the last nine years, including fullback Oren O'Neal, safety Tyrell Johnson, tight end David Johnson, defensive end Alex Carrington, offensive lineman Derek Newton, linebacker Demario Davis, defensive back Don Jones and defensive lineman Ryan Carrethers.

The six Arkansas State players in attendance today began the event by meeting with NFL personnel inside the A-State Football Facility at approximately 8 a.m.  The event continued in the weight room, where scouts put the players through bench press reps at 225 pounds.

The vertical jump, broad jump shuttle drills, speed times and receiving and defensive drills were conducted during the on-field testing.  Among the NFL teams with representatives on hand were the New England Patriots, Kansas City Chiefs, Oakland Raiders, New York Giants, Green Bay Packers, Denver Broncos, Seattle Seahawks, Jacksonville Jaguars, Tennessee Titans, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Detroit Lions, Indianapolis Colts, Chicago Bears and Washington Redskins. The 2016 NFL Draft is set for April 28-30.
