Schaedig, Warrington Earn SBC Weekly Volleyball Awards

JONESBORO, Ark. (8/29/16) – A pair of Arkansas State seniors were honored with Sun Belt Conference weekly awards as Markie Schaedig was named Defensive Player of the Week and Mallory Warrington earned Setter of the Week recognition per an announcement by the league office Monday afternoon.

A native of Little Rock, Ark., Schaedig continued her excellent defensive career at A-State with 60 digs (5.45 per set) across three matches during the TCU Invitational to open the 2016 season. She recorded 19 digs in each of the Red Wolves' 3-0 wins over Northwestern State and North Carolina State before adding 22 more in the team's final match of the tournament against TCU. The libero currently ranks first in the SBC in digs per set and is 23rd in the nation after one weekend.

Warrington, a native of Lake St. Louis, Mo., had a fantastic weekend leading the A-State offense to a 2-1 record at the TCU Invitational as the team hit .241 during the three matches. She dished out 127 assists (11.55 per set) and also picked up double-doubles with double-digit dig totals against Northwestern State and TCU. She handed out 37 assists against both Northwestern State and North Carolina State before recording 53 against TCU. Her 11.55 assists per set average ranks first in the league and 24th in the nation after the opening weekend.

The Defensive Player of the Week award was Schaedig's 11th in her career, while the Setter of the Week award was Warrington's sixth and seventh total weekly award after winning a Freshman of the Week award in 2013.

Arkansas State returns to action next weekend at the Marcia E. Hamilton Classic in St. Louis, Mo. The Red Wolves will face tournament host Saint Louis Sept. 2 at 7 p.m. The team will then face Cal Poly (10 a.m.) and Western Kentucky (4:30 p.m.) on Saturday, Sept. 3 to conclude the event.
