CONWAY, Ark. (9/29/16) – The Arkansas State women's tennis team enjoyed a successful first day at the UCA Fall Invitational Friday afternoon by winning eight out of a possible 12 matches.
In the singles' draw Victoria Roberts, Allison Quammen and Julie Gauguery all earned victories to advance in their respective draws. Roberts battled back from a 6-1 loss in the opening set against Petya Simenova of Oral Roberts, to take the final set 6-3 and then won the tie break 10-5.
Gauguery advanced on the top flight with an impressive 6-3, 6-2 win over Northeastern State's Molly Worden, while Quammen downed SEMO's Joanne Hollings 6-1, 6-1.
“I was really impressed with how we played today,” A-State tennis coach Kel Lange said. “I thought we performed really well against some great competition and we continue to improve each time we take the court.”
In the doubles' flight the team of Shelby King and Sabina Jeresic won their match over Murray State's Sara Bjork and Amina Hadzic by a score of 6-4 and then downed SEMO's Kseniya Zonova and Anais Emelie 6-3.
In other action the team of Victoria Pisani and Quammen also earned a win with a victory over Northeastern State's Caitlin McCullough and Betka Gombarova.
The action resumed Saturday morning at 9 a.m. at the UCA Tennis courts with semifinal action in both the singles and doubles flights with championship matches set to take place in the afternoon.
