VICKSBURG, Miss. (3/20/18) – The Arkansas State women's tennis team won its second straight match with a 4-0 victory over Alcorn State Wednesday afternoon in Vicksburg, Miss., at the Halls Ferry Road Courts.
The Red Wolves took the doubles' point by winning all three matches by scores of 6-1. Shelby King and Shannon O'Brien improved their overall doubles' record to 7-3 with a victory over AAmmaarah Tim and Alessendra Maganuco, while Kirsty Venter and Sabina improved their winning streak to five in a row with a win over Veronika Pytikova and Klavdija Bukovec. Anita Detlava and Berta Masdevall Masip rounded the day with a win on court one against Bianca Birkenstock and Anastasia Vaganova.
On the singles' courts, the A-State did not drop a set and captured three singles wins in straight sets, while it was up in the remaining three matches at the time the match was clinched.
O'Brien improved her on the year to 5-2 with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Pytikova on court five, while Venter now has a team best four match winning streak with a solid 6-2, 6-2 win over Bukovec. The match was clinched on court three when Jeresic downed Maganuco 6-2, 6-0 for her fifth singles' match win of the year.
“We got off to a really great start in doubles' and that momentum really carried through into our singles' play,” A-State head coach Kel Lange said. “We probably played as well as we have at every position today as we have all season.”
Arkansas State will next open Sun Belt Conference play this weekend with the first of two pod matches in Monroe, La. First up for the Red Wolves will be Texas State on Friday, followed by a contest against UT Arlington on Saturday.
