JONESBORO, Ark. (12/2/21) – A much-anticipated indoor season begins Friday for the Arkansas State track and field teams, which travel to Pittsburg, Kansas, for Friday and Saturday competition.
Action begins at 1 p.m. Friday with the Boo Rogers Combined Events, featuring A-State's Ty Graser in the heptathlon and Isabel Daines in the pentathlon. Then, the rest of the squad opens the indoor campaign in the Crimson and Gold Invitational. Both events will be held at Pittsburg State's Robert W. Plaster Center.
Graser finished sixth in the heptathlon at the 2021 Sun Belt Conference Championships, totaling 4,950 points to help A-State's men take the 2021 team crown. Daines, a freshman from Perth, Australia, will compete in the Scarlet and Black for the first time on Friday.
3 THINGS TO KNOW:
1. BACK IN BUNCHES: Even though we are over two months away from the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championships, it's worth noting the points Arkansas State track and field returns on the indoor side this season. A-State's women return a whopping 135 of 145 points (93.10 percent) from last season's title, while the men are not far behind at 138 of 155 points (89.03 percent).
2. THE OTHER PITT: Arkansas State has seen great recent success when competing at Pittsburg State. A-State competed twice at the Plaster Center in 2019-20 – in December at the Boo Rogers Combined Events and the Crimson and Gold Invitational and again in February at the Indoor Gorilla Classic. The Red Wolves posted a strong opener in December 2019, boasting over 20 collegiate bests, while breaking both the men's and women's distance medley relay school records in the February meet.
3. BACK TO DECEMBER: A-State likes to get in a December track meet before breaking for finals and Christmas. The Red Wolves will be one of five Sun Belt Conference programs getting started before the New Year.
