PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. (4/21/22) – The Arkansas State women's tennis team won the doubles point but fell to Troy 4-2 Thursday in the first round of the Sun Belt Conference Women's Tennis Championship at the Peachtree City Tennis Center.
Led by First Team All-Conference doubles pair
Thea Rice and
Nejla Zukic, A-State (6-15) took the doubles point to lead 1-0. Rice and Zukic battled back from an early deficit to take the set 6-3 on court one. Meanwhile on court three,
Emily Surcey and
Hunter Roper topped the Trojans 6-3 to clinch the doubles point.
Yasmine Humbert and
Sofia Vdovychenko trailed 5-4 on court two when the doubles point was clinched for A-State.
Troy (10-12) evened the tally at 1-1 with Olivia Elliott defeating Vdovychenko 6-2, 6-3 in straight sets on court five. The Trojans grabbed a 2-1 advantage with Kristina Kukaras defeating Rice 6-1, 6-4 on court one, but
Yasmine Humbert downed Franziska Ahrend 6-3, 6-4 on court six to make it 2-2. Troy took a 3-2 lead with Anastasiia Khoklova winning over Surcey 6-2, 6-4 on court two. The Trojans clinched the match with Hagar Amin defeating
Hunter Roper 7-5, 6-1 on court four. In the lone singles match to go unfinished, Zukic trailed Michelle Ncube 7-6, 5-2.
