SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (1/26/24) – Missouri State won the doubles point and three singles matches to clinch a 4-1 victory over the Arkansas State women's tennis team Friday afternoon.
A-State (1-2) dropped a highly-contested doubles point to face an early 1-0 deficit. Sarah Millard and Abigail Thurmer were dealt a 6-4 loss on court two giving Missouri State (1-2) an early advantage in doubles. Nejla Zukic and Yasmine Humbert had a match point at 6-3 in a tiebreak on court one, but their match went unfinished as Rebecca Brody and Ariadna Fernandez fell in a tiebreak 9-7. Brody and Fernandez had a 3-1 lead in the tiebreak before the Bears duo took a 6-3 advantage.
Fernandez got the Red Wolves on the board with a 6-1, 6-3 win on court five, her third consecutive singles win in as many matches played this season. Missouri State regained the lead with Elif Gunal downing Humbert 6-2, 6-3 on court three. Brody came up short 7-5, 6-4 on court two and Millard dropped a first set tiebreak 7-6 (7-2) and the second set 6-1 to Cristina Flaquer on court one as the Bears clinched the match. Emiliya Margolin took the first set on court six against Sandra Lukacova 6-4 and trailed the second set 4-3 when the match was clinched. Zukic dropped the opening set 6-4 on court four against Juliette Robinson, but won the second set 6-3 before the match was concluded.
A-State remains in Springfield, Mo., to take on Oral Roberts Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
