STRUTHERS, Ohio. (10/17/25) – Opening its 2025-26 season, the sixth-ranked Arkansas State women's bowling team is sixth among 18 teams in total pinfall after the first day of the Chelsea Gilliam Penguin Classic hosted by Youngstown State.
A-State was 4-1 over five head-to-head 5-game Baker total pinfall matches Friday. The Red Wolves opened with back-to-back victories over Coppin State (935-888) and Alabama A&M (897-811) before coming up short against No. 2 Nebraska 1,059-990. A-State bounced back with back-to-back match totals over 1,000 pins with a 1,002-938 margin against No. 25 Niagara and a 1,011-747 conclusion against Walsh.
The Red wolves totaled 4,835 pins on the day for an average of 193.4. Nebraska led the field with a 4-1 record and 5,404 pins, an average of 216.2. Vanderbilt (5,266), Jacksonville State (5,254), Youngstown State (5,074) and Sacred Heart (4,915) comprise the top five.
Five traditional matches are scheduled Saturday, beginning with a position round contest. A-State will then face No. 21 Valparaiso, No. 12 Duquesne, No. 2 Vanderbilt and No. 11 Sacred Heart.
