Joe Gorby was named Assistant Athletics Media Relations Director at Arkansas State University in September 2012.
Gorby serves as Arkansas State's primary publicity contact for the NCAA Division I men's basketball, men's and women's cross country, and men's and women's track & field programs. He also is the secondary contact for the Red Wolves’ nationally-recognized football program.
Prior to A-State, Gorby was the athletics communications director at Ferris State University since November 1995. He joined the FSU Sports Information staff in August 1994 and spent just over a year as an assistant before being promoted to the director’s position in 1995.
At Ferris State, Gorby managed the communications for the Bulldogs’ 15 intercollegiate sports along with maintaining the athletics department's web site and overseeing the athletics department's publications. Gorby served 15-plus years as the publicity contact for the school’s NCAA Division I men’s ice hockey program. He coordinated the Hobey Baker Award campaign for first-team All-America selection and top three national player of the year finalist Chris Kunitz (2002-03) while at Ferris State. Gorby also promoted FSU All-America wide receiver Clarence Coleman, who was a 1999 Harlon Hill Trophy national finalist as the NCAA Division II's top college football player.
During his time at Ferris State, Gorby served as a member of FSU's Bulldog Athletics Hall of Fame Selection and Display Committees along with assisting in advertising sales.
Prior to Ferris State, Gorby served five years (1989-94) as the assistant SID at Michigan Technological University after completing a two-year stint (1987-89) as a graduate assistant at NCAA Division I Western Kentucky University. Before WKU, he worked as a student assistant at NCAA-I Central Michigan University (1986-87) and was a sports writer for the college newspaper (CMU Life) for two years.
A native of Sand Lake, Mich., Gorby received a bachelor's degree in journalism from CMU (1988) with an emphasis in public relations. A member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), Gorby has been recognized numerous times by CoSIDA for excellence in both publications and writing. He also served on CoSIDA's Workshop Program Committee for two years and presented a table topic at the 2000 national workshop. Gorby was a member of the statistical staff at several NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Regional Championship Tournaments and was a volunteer worker at the 2014 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball South Regional Tournament in Memphis, Tenn. Gorby served two years as a East Region Committee member for Don Hansen's Football Gazette NCAA Division II All-America Team.
He was selected as the recipient of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association's (CCHA) Sports Information Director of the Year for the 2008-09 season at the CCHA Awards Banquet held March 2009 in Detroit, Mich.
Gorby also holds membership in the History Channel Club and The National Association of Photoshop Professionals (NAPP).
