John Mohring enters his second season as a defensive graduate assistant coach at Arkansas State.
His first season at A-State saw the Red Wolves post a 7-6 record and play in the 2015 Go- Daddy Bowl.
Mohring came to Arkansas State after most recently serving as a defensive assistant at Valdosta State, but his coaching experience also includes working as the defensive coordinator at The Canterbury School in Fort Myers, Fla., from 2011-12.
Mohring enjoyed a highly-decorated career as linebacker at Georgia Southern, where he was a four-year starter from 2003-06 and voted the squad’s most valuable player in 2005 and 2006 while acting as the team captain.
Mohring earned All-Southern Conference recognition from 2004-06 and completed his career as the school’s fifth all-time leading tackler with 302 stops to his credit.
A First Team AFCA All-America choice in 2006, Mohring was a Buck Buchanon Award finalist. That followed his Junior campaign when he earned Third Team All-America honors from The Sports Network and was named First Team All-Southeast Region by the Don Hanson Football Gazette.
Following his stellar career at Georgia Southern, he signed a free agent contract with the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers and was named the team’s rookie camp MVP. He went on to compete in the Arena Football League as a linebacker for the Orlando Predators from 2007-08.
His professional career also includes time in the Canadian Football League, playing for the Montreal Alouettes from 2009-10. He helped the Alouettes win the Grey Cup in 2009. He went on to play for the Iowa Barnstormers from 2011-13.
Mohring earned his bachelor’s degree in General Business from Georgia Southern University in 2006. He is currently pursuing his Master of Sports Administration from Arkansas State University. Mohring’s father, John Sr., played linebacker for the Cleveland Browns & Detroit Lions, and his mother, Trisha, was an amateur tennis pro.
