Timothy Thompson, (“Coach T”) enters his second season as assistant coach for the 2019-20 Arkansas State Track & Field team, where he oversees the short sprints, hurdles, and relays.
In his first season, Coach T produced 2 NCAA All-Americans (1st Team, 2nd Team and Honorable Mention, 5 Sun Belt Conference (SBC) champions, 9 NCAA West Prelims qualifiers, 30 All-SBC performers, 3 A-State school record holders, 1 SBC all-time and championship meet record, and 13 inclusions into A-State's top-10 all-time performance lists.
Most notably, he coached Caitland Smith, a three-time All-American, four-time SBC Champion and three-time school record holder with a time of 11.08 in 100 meters and 22.75 in the 200 meters. Smith also placed sixth at the 2019 USATF National Championships, earning a spot on the 2019 USA Team at the IAAF World Championships. He also coached the women’s 4x100 relay of Jonae Cook, Caitland Smith, Kerra Williams, and Ozzy Erewele to a SBC-record and school-record NCAA West Prelims qualifying mark of 44.70.
Coach T came to the Red Wolves after spending the 2017-18 season with Kansas Wesleyan. While working with the Coyotes, Thompson oversaw the sprints and hurdles group. Prior to Kansas Wesleyan, he spent two seasons as a volunteer coach at the University of Nebraska focusing on the sprinters and relay teams.
Thompson competed for UT Arlington from 2006-09, running the 110m hurdles, 100m, 200m, 4x100m relay and 4x400m relay. While competing for the Mavericks, Thompson was a key part of the 2007 Southland Conference outdoor championship team. He was a five-time All-Southland Conference performer and was a regional qualifier in 2007 and 2008 in the 110m hurdles and 4x100m relay.
Prior to his collegiate career, Thompson was an All-American high school athlete. He was a three-time Class 5A district champion in the 110m and 300m hurdles, three-time regional qualifier, three-time Texas Relays qualifier and a Texas Relays finalist in his senior season.
Thompson obtained his bachelor’s degree from North Texas in 2014 and earned his Level I USA Track & Field Coaching Certification for sprints, hurdlers and relays in 2013.
