MONROE, La.?
Nick Noce's second-best passing effort of his career wasn't enough to help the Indians of Arkansas State hold off Louisiana-Monroe on Saturday as the Indians of ULM downed the Indians of ASU, 31-27, in a come-from-behind victory.
With the score knotted at 24, ASU (2-3, 1-1) took its first lead of the game when
Eric Neihouse booted a career-best 50-yard field goal with just 1:22 left in the game. But apparently that was plenty of time for ULM quarterback Steven Jyles.
ULM (2-3, 2-0) took over on offense at its own 32 with 1:22 left to play in the game and trailing by three. Jyles took what was a stagnate offense in the second half and rapidly marched ULM down the field on a 6 play, 68-yard drive that consumed just 46 seconds. The drive ended in a two-yard touchdown plunge by Jyles.
Noce still managed to bring ASU back into the game in the second half with his second-best passing game of his career. Noce's 275-yards is second only to his 418 against Memphis in 2004. Noce connected on 22 of 32 pass attempts, tossing for one score and rushing for two others.
Mental mistakes and miscues in all phases of the game cost the ASU squad the entire night as a bad snap on a punt, a misplayed option pitch on offense, 13 penalties and several missed tackles left ASU always fighting out of a hole.
ASU trailed by a 21-7 count quickly in the second quarter when Drouzon Quillen was left open for a 58-yard touchdown reception from Jyles at the 11:15 mark. Quillen caught three passes on the day for 99 yards and two scores.
The ASU squad was without leading rusher
Antonio Warren, but was replaced ably by
Shermar Bracey. Bracey carried the ball a season-high 23 times for 91 yards.
Chris Easley added nine carries for 62 yards ASU ASU amassed 450 yards of offense on the day.
The loss drops ASU a game behind ULM in the chase for the conference crown and is the first time under
Steve Roberts that ASU has lost to ULM.
