JONESBORO, Ark.?
Eric Neihouse's 35-yard field goal split the uprights as time ran off the clock, giving the Indians of Arkansas State an exciting come-from-behind win over Louisiana-Lafayette on Thursday night, 39-36.
The Indians (3-3, 2-1 SBC) faced a 22-7 deficit in the third quarter after Josh Harrison scored from three-yards out with three second left in the third. But the fourth quarter was entirely different for the Tribe.
After a three-and-out the following series for the Indians, ULL (1-5, 1-2) running back Abdule Levier was hit by
Khayyam Burns, jarring the ball loose, and linebacker
Devrett Wade fell on the ball to give ASU possession. Four plays later, quarterback
Nick Noce found
Shermar Bracey on the right side for a 25-yard score, pulling ASU within 22-14.
ULL answered ASU's score with a touchdown on a 10-play, 74-yard drive to push the lead back to 15 at 29-14, but ASU took the ensuing kickoff and went to the ULL 40 where the drive stalled.
On fourth and seven, Noce's pass floated out the grasp of
Chris Miller. On the
pass attempt, Noce was hit late by Joe Bradley who was whistled for a personal foul, sustaining the ASU drive. Three plays later, Bracey again found pay dirt when he leapt three yards into the endzone, allowing ASU to pull back to within eight at 29-21.
Again, the Ragin' Cajuns sputtered on offense, going three-and-out after moving the ball just seven yards. ULL's punt was returned seven yards by
James Johnson to set up the Indians at the ASU 34 with 11:11 left to play in the game.
Three plays netted nine yards for the Tribe when Noce scrambled for two yards to give ASU a first down at the ASU 45. On the next snap Noce found
Levi Dejohnette for a 55-yard score, and a two-point pass attempt to
Manuel Burton from Noce knotted the score at 29 with 10:08 left in the game.
ASU again was without start tailback
Antonio Warren, who ranks seventh nationally in rushing yards per game. But Bracey filled in admirably, rushing 25 times for 167 yards and a score. Bracey added three receptions on the night for another 34 yards and a touchdown.
The comeback was made even more astounding when factoring in the rushing yards by ULL and the time of possession stats. The Ragin' Cajuns rushed for 457 yards and held the ball 35:44 of the game while converting on an unheard of 14 of 19 third downs.
Noce threw for 194 yards and three scores on the night, leading ASU to 458 yards of offense in the night. The Indian defense forced three turnovers, two in the decisive second half that lead to points for the Indians.
