No. 3 Ranked Memphis Tops Arkansas State

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (11/20/07) ? Despite getting a game-high 32 points from senior guard Adrian Banks and shooting a season-high 46 percent from the field, the Arkansas State men's basketball team (0-3) fell 84-63 to the No. 3 ranked Memphis Tigers (5-0) Tuesday night at FedExForum.

Memphis connected on 7-of-14 three-point attempts and shot 56 percent from the field to build a 43-25 halftime lead.  ASU got 17 points from Banks in the first half alone and shot 45 percent from the field, but was hurt by 15 turnovers over the game's first 20 minutes.

ASU led 8-6 six minutes into the game and trailed just 15-20 with 8:59 remaining in the first half, but Memphis went on an 11-0 run sparked by three consecutive three-point field goals by Willie Kemp to take a 31-15 lead at the 6:29 mark. Memphis matched its largest lead of the half when Doneal Mack hit a three-pointer as time expired to give the Tigers an 18-point advantage at the break.

Memphis outscored ASU just 41-38 in the second half, but did not allow the Indians closer than 16 points throughout the half.

“We are very disappointed that we lost, but at the same time we took a good step as a team in the right direction,” said ASU Head Coach Dickey Nutt.  “I'm very proud of our guys.  I thought they played with a lot of passion and did a good job sticking to what we had put in place for this basketball game.”

Memphis finished the game with a .550 shooting percentage in comparison to the Indians' .469 percentage.  Led by Kemp's six three-point field goals, Memphis hit 13-of-30 shots from beyond the arc for a .433 percentage.  The Tigers held a slight advantage on the boards, pulling down 28 rebounds to the Indians' 25.

Banks' 32 points were also his season-high and just one point shy of his career-high set last season.  It also marked the fourth time the Memphis native eclipsed 30 points in a game, doing so three times last season as well.

While Banks was the only ASU player scoring in double figures, Ryan Wedel added eight points, Kewain Gant six and Ashton Farmer five.

Memphis was led by Kemp's 22 points, followed by Mack with 19 and Chris Douglas-Roberts with 16.

ASU will host Eastern Illinois this Saturday, Nov. 24, at 7:05 p.m. in its second home game of the season.
