JONESBORO (12/16/07) ? Arkansas State sophomore guard Ryan Wedel scored 13 points and junior forward Yima Chia-Kur added 11 to lead the Indians (4-5) to a 57-47 victory over the Cardinals of Ball State (0-9) Sunday afternoon at the ASU Convocation Center.
ASU won its fourth consecutive game at the Convocation Center and has now won 13 of its last 15 home games.
After trailing 6-0 early in game, ASU went on a 22-5 run to take a 22-11 lead, doubling up the Cardinals on senior Kewain Gant's three-point play with 8:39 remaining in the half, and the Indians did not trail again.
Ball State was within seven at 32-25 at the break and cut the Indians' lead to 41-39 midway through the second half, but a technical foul on Cardinal freshman Melvin Goins with 11:06 remaining swung the momentum back in ASU's favor.
Indian sophomore Mike Lance converted both free throws off the technical, and ASU freshman Logan Nutt sank a 10-footer on the inbounds play to give the Tribe a 45-39 lead. Ball State did not get closer than five down the stretch.
Nutt added a career-high nine points to the ASU scoring totals, Shawn Morgan finished with eight, Lance and Gant each added five points, and Ifeayni Koggu, Ashton Farmer and P.J. Keaton all finished the afternoon with two points.
Morgan also led ASU on the boards with a game-high nine rebounds, narrowly missing his second double-double of the season. The Indians outrebounded the Cardinals 34-23, marking the third consecutive game they have won the battle on the boards.
ASU finished the game with a .415 shooting percentage, while holding Ball State to a .375 percentage. The Cardinals' 47 points were the fewest allowed by an ASU team since holding Richmond to 37 during the 2005-06 season.
Brandon Lampley led the Cardinals with 13 points and Peyton Stovall added 12.
Arkansas State returns to action Dec. 20 when the Indians host Florida Atlantic in the Tribe's Sun Belt Conference opener. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
