JONESBORO (12/30/07) ? The Arkansas State men's basketball team extended its home winning streak to six games with a dominating 92-43 victory over MacMurray College Sunday afternoon at the Convocation Center.
The Indians won for the fourth time over their last five games to even their record at 6-6, while the Highlanders dropped to 1-8 on the season. ASU took a brief break from Sun Belt Conference play to face MacMurray in the first ever meeting between the two teams, but will continue league play Thursday at Louisiana-Lafayette.
Ryan Wedel scored a game-high 20 points to lead four ASU players scoring in double figures and seven finishing with at least six points. The Indians' inside game was too much for MacMurray as they outscored the Highlanders 44-18 in the paint and grabbed a season-high 52 rebounds to the Highlanders 33. ASU also turned 23 MacMurray turnovers into 33 points while committing just 10 turnovers itself.
ASU held just a 15-11 lead five minutes into the game, but outscored MacMurray 34-8 the remainder of the first half to take a 49-19 advantage into the locker room. The Indians held the Highlanders scoreless for the first 3:30 of the second half and took a 58-19 advantage before going on to lead by as much as 51 points.
“We had a good tune-up for a tough upcoming contest Thursday (against Louisiana-Lafayette)”, said ASU Head Coach Dickey Nutt. “We had a lot of guys do a lot of good things and I feel like we continue to improve as a team, but the real test will be coming Thursday when we go on the road and get back into conference play.”
Joining Wedel with double-figure points were Michael Lance with a career-high 17 points, Yima Chia-Kur with a career-tying 17 points and Jeremy Thomas with 11. Shawn Morgan led the Indians on the boards with nine rebounds, while Ifeanyi Koggu approached a triple-double with a career-high eight rebounds, eight points and a career-high seven assists.
ASU finished the game with a .447 shooting percentage while holding MacMurray to a .308 percentage. ASU's bench posted 37 points in comparison to seven points from the MacMurray reserves. MacMurray was the fourth opponent ASU has held below 60 points in a game and improved to 10-0 over the last two seasons when doing so. ASU also finished with a season-high 15 steals.
ASU takes a 1-1 Sun Belt Conference record into its game against Louisiana-Lafayette (5-7, 2-0) Jan. 3 at the Cajundome at 7:05 p.m.
