Arkansas State Football Falls 35-18 at FAU

BOCA RATON, Fla. (11/14/09) - The Arkansas State football team dropped its third-straight contest, falling in Sun Belt Conference action at Florida Atlantic 35-18 Saturday. The Red Wolves dropped to 2-7 overall with a 1-4 league mark. Florida Atlanta picked up their first home win on the campaign, improving to 3-6 with a 3-2 Sun Belt record.

In the first start of his career, freshman quarterback Ryan Aplin connected with freshman wide receiver Taylor Stockemer for each player's first career passing or receiving touchdown and the only touchdown for the Red Wolves in the contest with 42-seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. ASU missed the two-point try.

Aplin directed the action in the final scoring drive for 60 yards on six plays before teaming up with Stockemer for the score. Stockemer had two receptions and netted 12 yards.

Aplin had the longest rush by any ASU player this season when he scrambled for a 47 yard gain in the first quarter. Aplin completed the game with 168 passing yards completing 20 of 26 passes with no interceptions. He also led the team with 82 yards on the ground.

ASU had 344 total yards of offense with a balanced attack of runs and passes with 176 on the ground and 168 through the air.

Sophomore running back Derek Lawson had 62-yards for ASU averaging 7.4 yards per carry with a long run of 26 yards. 

Senior wide receiver Brandon Tompkins had 109 all-purpose yards for the Red Wolves leading the team with five receptions for 43 yards.

Freshman linebacker Nathan Herrold led the team with 11 tackles, three of which were solo hits.

ASU led at the half by two, 9-7, with senior placekicker Josh Arauco scored a field goal from 22 yards out with 1:03 remaining in the half. Arauco also connected on 19 and 35 yard field goals in the first half and tied his career high by hitting his fourth with 8:18 remaining in the fourth quarter

On their final scoring drive of the first half, the Red Wolves marched down the field for 92 yards, starting on their own three yard line. The drive consumed 10:03 of playing time and was the longest drive this season by ASU by 2:04.

ASU continues action on the road when they travel to Middle Tennessee next Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. kick.
