Red Wolves Claim 80-66 Victory Over UT Martin

JONESBORO (11/25/09) – Sophomore guard Daniel Bryant came off the bench to score a career-high 20 points and lead the Arkansas State men's basketball team (3-1) to an 80-66 victory over UT Martin (1-3) Wednesday night at the Convocation Center.

The Red Wolves improved to 2-0 at home and are off to a 3-1 start for the second consecutive season.  ASU notched its fourth straight victory over the Skyhawks dating back to the 2006-07 season.

Also reaching double figures in the scoring column for ASU were freshman guard Brandon Reed with a career-high 19 points and freshman forward Brandon Peterson with 11.  Bryant and Peterson were part of the Red Wolves bench that outscored the Skyhawks reserves 39-10.

The game's first 11 minutes featured three lead changes and three ties with neither team holding more than a four-point advantage, but with the score tied 17-17 ASU took the lead for good at the 9:38 mark with two free throws by Peterson.  Leading just 30-29 with 3:09 left in the opening half, the Red Wolves went on a 13-4 run capped by a Reed lay-up with two seconds remaining to take a 43-33 advantage into the break.

“I thought our team started not as well as I would have liked,” said ASU head coach John Brady. “Offensively we were fine, but defensively in the first seven to eight minutes we didn't defend as well as I thought we needed to. But as the game got going we got pretty good defensively and offensively we got on track too. But the last 10 minutes of the first half and the first 10-12 minutes of the second half that was 20-22 minutes of pretty good basketball for us to take a 28-point lead. The thing I was disappointed in was how we closed the game. I would have liked to maintain that lead, but we have some young players and had to substitute some guys and do some teaching and talking. What I want to do is finish the game in the correct way because of what is ahead.”

UT Martin was able to stay within 13 points of ASU for the first seven minutes of the second half, but the Red Wolves blew it open over the next four minutes.  Holding a 53-40 lead with 13:31 remaining, ASU went on a 17-2 run push its lead to 28 points, 70-42, at the 9:40 mark.  The Skyhawks were able to cut the lead down to 13 points, 76-63, with 1:59 left in the game, but couldn't get any closer.

The Red Wolves hurt the Skyhawks with a 10-of-22 (.455) shooting performance from beyond the arc.  Reed (3) and Bryant (4) were responsible for seven of ASU's 10 three pointers, its second most of the season.  UT Martin managed to make just 1-of-12 attempts from three-point range.

ASU shot 44 percent from the field, while UT Martin hit 41 percent of its attempts.  The Red Wolves also held a slight advantage on the boards, 42-40, and blocked eight shots to the Skyhawks three.  ASU made 69 percent (16-23) of its free throw attempts and UT Martin 62 percent (15-24).

Bryant and junior guard Rashad Allison both posted a team-high three assists, Peterson recorded a team-high four blocks and sophomore forward Martavius Adams, freshman guard Trey Finn and Bryant all posted a team-high two steals.

ASU continues a three-game home stand Sunday, Nov. 29 against Indiana State.  The game is set to tip at 2:05 p.m. from the Convocation Center.
