ASU Basketball Falls At Denver 64-55

DENVER, Colo. (12/31/09) – Arkansas State sophomore forward Martavius Adams recorded a career-high 17 points, but the Red Wolves fell in Sun Belt Conference action 64-55 to Denver Thursday at Magness Arena.

Adams led all players in scoring and recorded the second-most rebounds on the floor with six.

The Red Wolves held Denver to one of their lowest shooting performances from beyond the three-point arc of the season on 3-14 shooting (21.4%) and held the Pioneers to 20-42 shooting from the field (47.6%). ASU did not give up a three-pointer by DU in the second half and held them to just 38.9% from the floor in the second half.

“We just weren't efficient enough offensively, we pretty good defensively. We outrebounded that team which we should have but we just have got to quit having these highs and lows particularly from the free throw line,” said ASU head coach John Brady.

ASU was without leading scorer Daniel Bryant for most of the game after Bryant played six minutes and aggravated a previous injury, forcing him to leave the game. Bryant had five points and was 2-3 from the field before being forced out of the contest.

ASU outrebounded Denver 34-28, including pulling down 11 offensive rebounds to Denver's two. The Red Wolves were outscored in the paint 24-32.

After going down by 11 points (19-8) after Sabatino Chen laid in a bucket at the 11:21 mark of the first half ASU went on an 8-0 run to cut the lead to three. Freshman Brandon Reed hit a three pointer before Bryant hit a fast break layup. Bryant capped the run with a three-pointer at 8:05.

Denver responded with a 15-4 run to close the half up 34-20. Coming back from the half, ASU cut into the Denver lead on an 8-4 run and cut the Pioneers lead to seven in the final ten-seconds of the game, but were unable to overtake the lead.

Junior guard Rashad Allison drained a three with six-seconds remaining to push the score to 62-55 in favor of Denver. After a pair of free throws by Brian Stafford, Denver set the final 64-55 tally.

Along with Adams, Reed was the only other ASU player in double-digit scoring 11. Freshman guard Trey Finn led the team in rebounding for the fourth-straight game, pulling down seven. Finn also had four points.

JeJuan Brown was third in scoring for ASU with nine points and six rebounds. Brown also tied a career-high with three blocks.

ASU shot 38-percent from the floor on 19-50 shooting and was 4-13 from three point range (30.8%). The Red Wolves were 13-26 from the free throw line.

Preseason all-conference selection Nate Rohnert led the Pioneers with 15 points and five rebounds.

The Red Wolves return home to play North Texas on Saturday. Tipoff at the Convocation Center is set for 7:05 p.m.
