Red Wolves Roll To 71-56 Win Over North Texas

JONESBORO, Ark. (1/2/10) – Although shorthanded on the night with only eight available players the Arkansas State men's basketball team rolled to a 71-56 Sun Belt Conference victory over North Texas Saturday at the ASU Convocation Center.

The win moved ASU to 7-6 with a 2-1 SBC record while North Texas fell to 9-5 with a 2-2 SBC mark.

“That is good as we can play at this point of the season. That's the way I like my teams to play. Play tough defensively, try to rebound it, take care of the ball and try to run some good offense and that's what we did. We played with a high energy level and carried out the game plan,” said ASU head coach John Brady. “The team played with a sense of urgency and toughness and that is what I want to keep with our team if we possibly can. I think that speaks a lot of our players, they did what they were supposed to do and carried out the game plan.”

Freshman Brandon Reed had a career night scoring 25 points on 10-19 shooting to lead all players in the contest. Sophomore Martavius Adams had 16 points for ASU and led the team in rebounding with eight.

Junior Rashad Allison had 12 points to round out the ASU players in double-figures.

ASU jumped out to a 12-2 lead start the contest. During that run Adams scored four points while Reed and Trey Finn each hit three pointers as the Red Wolves defense held strong with freshman Brandon Peterson recording two of his three blocks during the opening stretch.

A steal by Rashad Allison at the 00:40 mark of the first half which he converted into two points gave ASU a 10-point halftime lead, 32-22.

The Red Wolves never trailed in the contest and stretched their lead to 18 at the 8:49 mark of the second half when Adams dunked to put an exclamation point on an 8-0 ASU run.

A tip in by Brandon Peterson and a three pointer by Allison each put ASU back up by 18 at the 3:25 and 2:18 marks of the second half.

ASU forced North Texas into 16 turnovers and converted those into 17 points. The Red Wolves also held the Mean Green to their lowest shooting percentage of the season at 33% (19-57) while UNT entered the game averaging 47%.

North Texas had only two players in double-figure scoring Tristan Thompson who had 18 and George Odufuwa who had 10.

Although being outrebounded 33-37 by the Mean Green, ASU outscored UNT 30-26 in the paint, while scoring eight fast break points while holding their opponents to no fast breaks.

Arkansas State returns to action at Lamar on Monday. Tipoff in Beaumont, Texas is set for 7:05 p.m.
