ASU Basketball Rolls Over FIU For Fifth-Straight Sun Belt Victory

MIAMI, Fla. (1/21/10) – Freshman guard Brandon Reed broke the 20-point barrier for the third time this season scoring 25 as the Arkansas State men's basketball team rolled to a 76-61 Sun Belt Conference road win over FIU, Saturday.

This marked the fourth-straight win for the Red Wolves and fifth-straight in conference action as ASU improved to 11-7 and a first-place 6-1 league mark. The Golden Panthers fell to 6-16 with a 3-6 Sun Belt record.

Reed led three ASU players in double-figure scoring followed by Trey Finn with 12 and Rashad Allison with 10. Finn also pulled down nine boards while Allison had six assists with only one turnover.

Sophomore forward Martavius Adams led ASU down low with 13 rebounds while scoring nine points. As a team ASU outrebounded FIU by a large margin, 47-35, and outscored them in the paint 38-32.

ASU jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the opening minutes following a fast break jumper by Reed. FIU was held scoreless until Marvin Roberts hit a jumper at the 16:05 mark.

FIU took its largest lead of the game when Marlon Bright hit jumper in the paint to put the Golden Panthers up 27-20 at the 4:51 mark of the first half. But, ASU used a 13-4 run to close out the first frame to go into the locker room at the break up 33-31.

Reed tied the game with a jumper with 47 seconds remaining in the first half, and Finn put the Red Wolves up with a pair of free-throws at the 25-second mark.

The Red Wolves came out blazing in the second half going on an 8-0 run to begin the frame and went up by 10 on a tip-in from Finn at the 16:46 mark of the second half and never looked back.

“We looked like we were in a rush a little bit but settled down and ran better offense during the second half. I was proud of our team for getting a better road win,” said ASU head coach John Brady. “It was a good win for us, we just have to be able to get some rest and concentrate and stay mentally focused see if we can play a good game at FAU on Saturday.”

Jeremy Thomas dunked the ball with 1:11 remaining in the game to put the Red Wolves up by 16, their largest lead of the game. Finn hit a layup with 31-seconds left in the game to put ASU back up by 16.

Reed scored 17 points in the second-half, doubling his output in the first frame.

Phil Gary and Marvin Roberts led the Golden Panthers in the contest with 13 points apiece; Roberts also led the squad with nine rebounds.

The Red Wolves will be looking to sweep their four-game Sun Belt Conference road trip when they battle Florida Atlantic on Saturday. Tipoff in Boca Raton is set for 7 p.m. (EST).
