ASU Drops Sun Belt Road Contest At Florida Atlantic

BOCA RATON, Fla. (1/23/10) – Arkansas State wrapped up its four-game Sun Belt road trip with a 78-63 loss at Florida Atlantic Saturday. The loss moved ASU's overall record to 11-8 with a 6-2 Sun Belt record.

Although taking a loss to their record, the Red Wolves remain atop the Sun Belt with the best record in the league. The loss did snap a four-game winning streak for ASU and was their first loss in six SBC games.

Junior guard Rashad Allison paced the Red Wolves, scoring a career-high 16 points while also adding four assists and four rebounds. Sophomore forward Martavius Adams was the only other ASU player in double-digit scoring, adding 14 for Arkansas State. Adams also led ASU with six rebounds and recorded two blocks.

“I thought we were pretty good at times, physically with them but I think throughout the course of the game they were a little quicker on the perimeter and a little more physical than we were,” said ASU head coach John Brady. “FAU played well tonight and played better than we did. It would have been great to get this one and separate ourselves a little bit more from the rest of the league. Regardless, I told our team we are still leading the Sun Belt with a 6-2 record.”

Adams hit a layup with 18:03 remaining in the first half which sparked a 12-0 run for the Red Wolves. ASU stretched its lead out to nine (14-5) when junior forward Jeremy Thomas got a fast break layup to cap the run.

ASU led most of the first half before Greg Gantt hit a pair of free throws to put the Owls back on top, 28-27 with 3:24 remaining in the first half. Gantt also hit a layup to stretch their halftime lead out to seven, 35-28.

ASU came out strong in the second half, scoring six straight points cutting FAU's lead to just one when Adams hit a jumper at the 18:50 mark.

Freshman Brandon Peterson dunked the ball on the ensuing ASU possession to get within one but the Red Wolves were unable to overtake the lead again.

ASU and FAU shot nearly the same percentage with ASU shooting just slightly better at 43.9% (25-57) and the Owls shooting 43.8% (28-64).

ASU outscored FAU 30-26 in the paint with each team recording 38 rebounds.

Sanchez Hughley was 5-6 from three-point range and finished with 17 points leading four FAU players in double-digit scoring.

ASU returns home after spending the last four games on the road playing Louisiana-Lafayette on Thursday at the Convocation Center. Tipoff against the Ragin' Cajuns is set for 7:05 p.m.
