Reed Scores 34 To Lead ASU Past Denver, 73-62

JONESBORO (1/30/10) – Freshman guard Brandon Reed poured in a career-high 34 points, the most by an Arkansas State player since 2002, to lead the Red Wolves to a 73-62 victory over Denver in a Sun Belt Conference men's basketball game Saturday night at the Convocation Center.

ASU, now 13-8 overall and 8-2 in conference play, won for the sixth time over its last seven games and improved its home record to 8-3. After the victory, the Red Wolves still hold a two-game lead over second-place Louisiana-Lafayette in the SBC West Division standings.  Denver dropped to 13-9 overall and 6-5 in conference action.

“I appreciate the people that were here and I felt them on the bench. You fans that were here tonight I felt you down that stretch,” said ASU head coach John Brady. “I am proud of our team and I think our team is starting to be deserving of some of that support and attention because they really played well tonight the whole game.”

Brandon Reed just played phenomenal and I don't know if I have ever coached a guy that has played that well at least from an offensive standpoint,” said Brady. “The thing that I am proud of him, that the second half he didn't try to force it and shoot the ball all the time. He took some good shots the first half and the second half when they made a determined effort to keep him from shooting and limit his touches he let it come to him.”

Reed, who scored at least 20 points in a game for the fourth time this season, was responsible for the most points by an ASU player since Tevoris Thompson dropped in 41 against Lyon College on Dec. 7, 2002.  The only other ASU player reaching double figures for ASU in the game was Trey Finn with 11, while Martavius Adams posted eight points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Reed scored 24 points in the first half alone, helping the Red Wolves build a 42-28 halftime lead.  The score was tied 23-23 just over 10 minutes into the game, but ASU went on a 19-5 run, which included 13 points by Reed, to close the half.

The Pioneers chipped away at ASU's lead early in the second half to cut the Red Wolves' advantage to just 51-45 with 12:44 remaining, but couldn't get any closer the rest of the way. ASU responded with a 10-2 run over the next four minutes to push its lead back to double figures at 61-47.

Denver was able to pull back within seven points of the Red Wolves twice, the last time with 1:50 left to play.  However, Finn hit 5-of-6 free throws and Brandon Peterson scored on a lay-up to seal the win for ASU.

The Red Wolves posted a .510 shooting percentage, its fourth highest of the season, in comparison to the Pioneers' .458 mark from the field.  The Red Wolves made 4-of-11 shots from beyond arc, all four by Reed, while Denver was able to connect on 10-of-25 three-point attempts.  ASU took advantage of its opportunities at the charity stripe, making 19-of-25 attempts, while Denver was 8-of-11 at the line.

ASU outrebounded Denver 31-23, scored 14 second-chance points and scored 34 points in the paint to the Pioneers' 24.

Denver was led by two players scoring in double figures, including Brian Stafford with 19 points and Nate Rohnert with 13.

ASU returns to action Thursday, Feb. 4 in a 7:05 p.m. game at in-state rival UALR.  The Red Wolves defeated the Trojans 69-61 at the Convocation Center on Dec. 20 in the first meeting between the two teams this year.
