ASU Drops Final Nonconference Matchup At Lamar, 87-68

BEAUMONT, Texas. (1/4/10) – In his second straight start freshman Brandon Peterson scored a career-high 21 points with eight rebounds to lead the Red Wolves in their 87-68 loss at Lamar Monday. The matchup was the final nonconference contest for Arkansas State and the loss dropped ASU to 7-7 while the Cardinals improved to 8-7.

ASU jumped out to a 9-4 lead in the early minutes when Peterson made a layup at 16:37. ASU held the lead for the first 6:24 of the game and reclaimed it when Peterson tipped in the ball at the 12:15 mark. But, after Justin Nabors laid in the ball at 10:47 of the first half Lamar took a lead which they would never relinquish.

ASU trailed at the half 41-33 with Peterson recording 13 points in the first half while Finn had nine points and led the team with six rebounds.

The 41 points was a season high for first half points by Lamar.

Lamar stretched their lead out to double-digits in the second half outscoring ASU 46-35 in the second frame.

“We certainly didn't have the same energy that we had at home against North Texas,” said ASU head coach John Brady. “We got beaten in every aspect of the game. It was one of those nights when we couldn't do much of anything and they did everything really well. The only thing we did was stop what we thought the key to their team is-Anthony Miles, we held him to six points and got him in foul trouble.”

Miles entered the game averaging 15.4 points per game and was held to just 1-5 shooting with four free throws against ASU.

Freshman Trey Finn was the only other player in double-figures for ASU, scoring 14 points with seven rebounds. Freshman Adam Sterrenberg added nine points for the Red Wolves, playing 19 minutes in reserve action while sophomore Martavius Adams had nine points.

ASU was outscored in the paint 20-44 and outrebounded 34-42 in the contest.

ASU shot 40-percent from the floor in the matchup connecting on 24-60 shots and was 50-percent from the free-throw line on 16-32 shooting. Lamar connected on 53.8% of their shots (35-65) and was 13-19 from the charity stripe.

Charlie Harper led three Cardinals players in double-digit scoring putting up 23 while Justin Nabors had a double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds.

ASU returns home for conference action on Thursday, taking on Middle Tennessee at 7:05 p.m. at the Convocation Center.
