MOBILE, Ala. (1/9/10) - Arkansas State rallied from a seven-point halftime deficit to defeat South Alabama 69-63 in Sun Belt Conference action Saturday at the Mitchell Center.
Freshman guard Brandon Reed led the team and all-scorers with a career-high 26 points on 8-19 shooting and was perfect from the line (7-7).
Freshman guard Trey Finn continued to rebound the ball well, coming up with 11 boards to lead all players and added eight points.
ASU had two other players in double-figures with Martavius Adams adding 12 and Rashad Allison adding 11.
The Red Wolves surged in the second-half outscoring the Jaguars 37-24 and outrebounding them 18-11 in the half and 39-32 overall in the contest. ASU also won the battle of the paint 30-28.
"It's a great win for our team at this stage," said ASU head coach John Brady. "For us to do what I wanted us to do get a quality win here with three more road games to come I am really proud of our players and hopefully this will be a confidence builder for them."
ASU held the Jaguars to just 39.3-percent shooting and 25-percent from the three-point line in the second half and outshot them 44.6% (25-56) to 41.7 (25-60) in the contest.
ASU trailed 39-32 at the half. ASJ was up by one with 2:54 remaining in the half when Brandon Peterson hit the first half of a one and one, but the Jaguars went on a 10-2 run to finish up the half capped by a three-point basket by Rob Williams with just three seconds left on the clock.
Reed and Adams led the Red Wolves in scoring at the break with 10 and eight points respectively. Finn led all players with five rebounds at the half.
ASU captured the final lead when Brandon Peterson converted a layup at 11:24 to put the Red Wolves up 51-50 in the second half. The Red Wolves never relinquished the lead although South Alabama got within a point on three occasions.
ASU will get some much needed rest, not playing again until they travel to North Texas on Jan. 16
