JONESBORO (11/4/10) - Four Arkansas State players scored in
double figures, including sophomore Trey Finn with a team-high 16 points,
leading the Red Wolves to an 83-71 victory over Ouachita Baptist in a men's
basketball exhibition game Thursday night at the Convocation Center.
Joining Finn in double digits, Donald Boone scored 14 points
and Martavius Adams and Daniel Bryant both added 10 for the Red Wolves in their
first of two preseason games this year. A-State finished the game with a
.519 shooting percentage to Ouachita Baptist's .444 percentage and hauled in
seven more rebounds than the Tigers
Following three ties and seven lead changes, the Red Wolves went
in front for good with just over a minute left in the first half when Adams
made 1-of-2 free throws to break a 37-37 tie. Neither team led by more
than six points in the first half that ended with ASU ahead 44-39.
ASU started the second half with a 14-5 run to take a 58-44
lead, its largest advantage of the game. Ouachita Baptist slowly chipped
away at its deficit and was able to pull back within 71-67 and trailed just
75-70 with 3:49 left.
However, A-State outscored the Tigers 8-1 the rest of the way
to claim the 12-point victory and improve to 5-0 in exhibition games under
third-year head coach John Brady.
"I thought we played better the second half, but I certainly
wasn't pleased with it overall," said Brady. "We didn't play with the
sense of urgency that I would have liked. We didn't play on edge much at all,
and I thought we were casual at times defensively.
"We had some players play well in spots, but the only two
players that were consistent the whole game were Trey Finn and Adam Sterrenberg.
I thought Adam showed a lot of improvement in his game."
ASU held a 36-29 advantage on the boards and forced Ouachita
Baptist into 13 turnovers to its 10. Both teams had eight steals, but ASU
hit 19-of-27 free throws while the Tigers made 12-of-19.
Nine of ASU's 10 players that saw action finished with at
least four points, including Rashad Allison with and Sterrenberg with nine
each. Allison also recorded a team-high six assists and Adams was
responsible for ASU's only blocked shot.
Ouachita Baptist had three players score in double figures,
including Austin Mitchell with a game-high 18 points.
A-State will host Henderson State Monday, Nov. 8 at 7:05
p.m. in its second and final exhibition game. The Red Wolves open their
regular season Nov. 12 at Mississippi.
