ASU Men?s Basketball Knocks Off ULM, 69-52

JONESBORO (2/15/10) – Led by sophomore forward Martavius Adams with a career-high 18 points, the Arkansas State men's basketball team (15-10, 10-4) picked up a 69-52 victory over Louisiana-Monroe (11-15, 6-9) Monday night at the Convocation Center to move into a tie atop the Sun Belt Conference standings.

ASU, which plays three of its remaining four regular-season games at the Convocation Center, improved to 9-3 at home this season in front of a crowd of 4,109, its second largest of the year. With the victory, the Red Wolves moved back into a tie for first place in the overall conference standings with Middle Tennessee.

Adams led three ASU players scoring in double figures, including Brandon Reed with 14 and JeJuan Brown with 10.  Adams also led the Red Wolves with seven rebounds, while Rashad Allison matched his career-high assist total with 11.

Louisiana-Monroe held its only lead of the game at 14-13 with 12:34 left in the first half, but ASU responded with a 9-0 run over the next four minutes to go back on top 22-14.  After the Warhawks trimmed ASU's lead back to just four points, 26-22, at the 2:44 mark, the Red Wolves went on an 8-1 run to close the half with a 34-23 advantage.

ASU held a double-figure lead the entire second half and increased its lead to as much as 21 points, 67-46, late in the game as ULM never threatened to get back in the game over the final 20 minutes.

“This was a good team win,” said ASU head coach John Brady. “It was a win we needed to get coming off the Western Kentucky game. One of the things we implemented in practice that we wanted to get into the game was to have a better presence about us from a defensive standpoint, which would allow us to hold them to a lower field goal stat.

“One of our goals tonight was to hold Louisiana-Monroe below 40 percent from a field goal standpoint. We held them to 33.9 percent, which I think was the difference in the game. On the other end of the floor, we were able to create some easy baskets for ourselves. Not only did we score around the goal a little bit, but we shot our three's well tonight.”

The Red Wolves shot 52 percent from the floor, their fifth highest percentage of the season, while holding ULM to a .339 field goal percentage and 16 points below its scoring average.  ASU also hit 7-of-14 shots from beyond the arc and connected on 10 of its 14 free throw attempts.  ULM managed just a .231 three-point field goal percentage and was 8-of-12 at the charity stripe.

ASU also held a 33-31 advantage on the boards and dished out 19 assists to ULM's nine.  The Red Wolves' 19 assists were their fourth most of the season.

ULM also had three players score in double digits, led by Tommie Sykes with 14 points.  Dynile Forbes and Kenneth Averette both added 11 points for the Warhawks.

Arkansas State plays its final road game of the regular season Thursday, Feb. 18 when it catches Louisiana-Lafayette at 7:05 p.m. in another Sun Belt Conference West Division game.
