Red Wolves Men?s Basketball Drop Final Road Contest At Lafayette, 56-54

LAFAYETTE, La. (2/18/10) – Although battling for the full 40-minutes of action, the Arkansas State men's basketball team dropped a Sun Belt Conference matchup at Louisiana-Lafayette 56-54 Thursday night.

Sophomore forward Martavius Adams' career-high 16 rebounds and a team-high nine points led ASU as the Red Wolves moved to 15-11 overall and 10-5 in Sun Belt action.

The Red Wolves scoring was as balanced as it has been all season with eight players scoring over five points and none of them breaking into double-figures. Trey Finn and Jeremy Thomas were second on the team with eight points while Brandon Reed had seven for the Red Wolves.

“I think Lafayette is one of the most talented teams in our league and if you told me we would hold them to 57 before the game I would have said we had won the game,” said ASU head coach John Brady. “As good a defense we played on them, they played on us. They matched us intensity-wise. I think our team played hard and we had some chances to make the plays and the end and we didn't do it.”

ASU dominated down low scoring 34 points in the paint to ULL's 24 and outrebounding the Ragin' Cajuns 40-32.

Turnovers kept Louisiana-Lafayette in it as ASU gave up the ball 19 times to the Ragin' Cajuns 11. ULL was able to convert those 19 turnovers into 21 points.

ASU defended ULL well, holding them to 37-percent shooting from the floor and just 15% (3-20) from beyond the three-point arc, while ASU connected on 41.5% (22-53).

ASU led 37-20 at the break and led by as many as 11 when Reed hit a three-pointer with 6:55 remaining in the frame.

After ASU led the entire game Randell Daigle tied the game for the first time on a three-pointer at 16:32 in the second half.

The Reds recaptured the lead when Reed laid the ball in just over a minute later and another layup by Reed stretched their lead to six points at 14:14.

Rashad Allison hit a layup with 13:09 remaining to put ASU back up by six.

In the final minute and 25 seconds Tyren Johnson hit two free throws to tie the contest at 54-54. Daigle followed by hitting the second of two free throws to give ULL a one-point lead.

Colby Batiste then hit another free throw to set the final score at 56-54. Johnson led all players scoring 15 points while Daigle ranked second for ULL with 10.

ASU returns to action on Saturday when they host WKU. Fans should remember to wear black to the game as a part of the Cram The Convo Blackout Event. Tipoff with the Hilltoppers is set for 7:05 p.m.
