ASU Turf Installation Completed As Scheduled

JONESBORO, Ark. (7/30/10) - Installation of the new and state-of-the-art field turf surface inside ASU stadium has been completed as scheduled after a final inspection of the project was conducted Friday. The field is in practice and playing condition for the beginning of the Red Wolves fall camp which is set to begin next Friday (Aug. 6).

The installation process, which began April 25 after the conclusion of A-State's spring football camp, has now been entirely completed with logo alterations and the application of a sand base and "no-flyout" rubber.  The project was completed as scheduled with an original completion mark set for the end of July.

The new GeoSurfaces field turf will be slightly thicker than the previous product, which was installed when ASU originally transitioned from a grass field to an artificial playing surface prior to the 2006 season.

"The GeoSurfaces turf installed at the stadium is the highest density turf offered in the industry," said Charles Dawson of GeoSurfaces. "It is used in multiple facilities nationally and internationally including the NFL Quarterback Challenge Field in Grand Cayman, the UCLA indoor practice facility, Vanderbilt University's Baseball stadium, LSU's Alex Box Stadium and the University of San Diego."

Dawson continued, "the midfield logo at Arkansas State University is one of the largest ever installed on an NCAA field. Its nearly 1800 square foot surface area almost doubles the size of a standard 950 square foot logo used by the high majority of NCAA or NFL venues. We are extremely pleased that we were given the opportunity to work with Dr. Lee and the athletic department at ASU. ASU is a highly valued client and our commitment to the athletic department doesn't end with the completion of the stadium field."

The GeoSurfaces field is the best available product on the market and is designed to stand up to the elements and remain in pristine condition for years to come according to the civil engineer working the project Todd Bresee.

"The field itself is a state-of-the art system from the turf down to the base, we reworked the whole stadium. The turf is the newest thing on the market and is designed to not break down with sunlight or use over time and should give the university many many years of quality service," said Bresee who is with Sports Engineering. "The drainage is also state-of-the-art; there is actually a drain mat underneath the field which funnels the water to the perimeter drains which allows us to make the base of the field pretty much concrete so in the future any flooding that may occur will not affect the base of the field. That said it is a beautiful field and I am very happy with the work performed and the contractor that installed the field did great work."

All logos on the field have been completed including two "Wolf Head" logos in addition to a pair of Sun Belt Conference logos and a large "A-State" logo in the center of the field at the 50-yard line. Both end zones are red with Arkansas State in the center in white lettering. The playing field is outlined with white and black lines.

A-State opens its 2010 season Sept. 4 at Auburn and will play Louisiana-Monroe Sept. 18 in its home opener.  Season tickets are on sale and can be ordered by contacting the ASU Box Office at 870-972-ASU1 or 1-888-ASU-FANS or by visiting AStateRedWolves.com.  For more information, contact the ASU Marketing Department at 870-972-3880.
