JONESBORO, Ark.
(11/7/2011) — Arkansas State jumped out to a 15-0 lead and the Red Wolves were
never threatened as they rolled to a 65-51 victory over the Christian Brothers
Lady Bucs Monday night in women's exhibition basketball action at the ASU
Convocation Center.
Sophomore
forward Jane Morrill led the Red Wolves with 14 points, with junior guard
Ashley Olvera also finishing in double figures with 10 points.
The Red
Wolves maintained their 15-point lead throughout the first half, taking a 33-18
lead into the locker room at the break.
In the second half, ASU's lead swelled to as much as 27 points before
the Lady Bucs made a late run to set the final margin at 14 points.
“Tonight
was much better than the first exhibition game, which it should be,” said ASU
head coach Brian Boyer. “You usually
make pretty good strides between games one and two, and we made good strides
tonight. The start was really, really
good. From a defensive standpoint we did
a much better job of forcing turnovers and getting in passing lanes as compared
to the first game. Offensively, our
spacing was better and our movement was better, we just didn't hit as many
shots as we did last week. Even though
we didn't score as many points, I was still more pleased offensively than in
the first game.”
In addition
to the double-digit efforts from Morrill and Olvera, seven other Red Wolves got
into the scoring column, including sophomore guard Lunden Roberts with eight
points and junior guard Quinishia McDowell and freshman forward Jasmine Hunt
with seven points each. Senior guard
Meghan Lewis added six points and junior guard Andi Watson finished with
five. Sophomore forward Mekena Randle
and freshman guard Hanna Qedan added four points each to wrap up the scoring
for A-State. Olvera and Watson led ASU
on the boards with six rebound each and Olvera added seven assists and three
steals.
Jessica
Green led Christian Brothers with 16 points.
Arkansas
State shot 43.5 percent from the floor on the night while holding the Lady Bucs
to just 35.2 percent shooting.
With the
win, Arkansas State wrapped up the exhibition season at 2-0 after defeating
Maryville 78-73 Nov. 1. The Red Wolves
will open the regular season Nov. 13 at Charlotte, and the home opener is set
for Nov. 20 against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
