ASU Drops Final Nonconference At Savannah State

SAVANNAH, Ga. (2/1/11) – The Arkansas State men's basketball team mounted a late comeback but fell 67-61 at Savannah State dropping its final nonconference matchup of the regular season Tuesday.

ASU got within three points when senior guard Rashad Allison scored an old-fashioned three-point play with 4:22 left on the clock. But, ASU was unable to shrink the lead any further as the game wound down.

Allison led four Red Wolves in double-digit scoring with 18 including going 2-3 from three-point range. Senior guard Donald Boone and sophomore guard Trey Finn added 12 points each for ASU.

Junior forward Martavius Adams had 10 points with 13 rebounds completing his eighth career double-double and fourth of this season.

As a team, The Red Wolves outrebounded Savannah State 43-26 including pulling down 20 offensive rebounds which they converted into 23 second-chance points. ASU held the Tigers to just four offensive rebounds and four second-chance points.

“It was the most disappointing I have been,” said ASU head coach John Brady. “We didn't play until the last eight or nine minutes left in the game. It's just perplexing what we did, I'm disappointed. We have got to move forward and this team is good enough we can beat any team we play. But at times for some reason we just don't play like we are capable of playing.”

Jovanni Shuler led the Tigers with 20 points followed by Preston Blackmon with 16.

The Red Wolves fell to 12-13 while Savannah State picked up its fifth win of the season (5-17).

ASU jumped out to a 7-0 lead before Blackmon converted on a short jumper to score the Tigers first points of the game.

A three-pointer by Schuler tied the game at 9-all just before the first media time out.

Savannah State shot 50% during the first half to take a 36-28 lead into the locker room at the break. Blackmon and Shuler each had 11 points for the Tigers to lead the squad at the half.

Adams, Finn and Boone each had six points for the Red Wolves at the half. Finn and Adams each had five boards at the break leading all players.

As a team, ASU shot 10-28 in the first half (.35.7%) and outrebounded the Tigers 20-12. The Red Wolves also had three blocked shots and three steals in the first half.

Arkansas State returns to conference action on Saturday when they host West Division leader Denver at the ASU Convocation Center. Tipoff against the Pioneers is set for 7:05 p.m.
