ASU Baseball Uses Big Eighth Inning To Pick Up Win Past UTM

JONESBORO (3/16/11) – The Arkansas State baseball team came back from a one-run deficit, plating three runs in the eighth inning to pick up a 5-3 win over UT Martin Wednesday at Tomlinson Stadium and Kell Field in its last tune up before beginning Sun Belt Conference action this weekend.

The win pushes the Red Wolves back to .500 at 9-9 while UTM remained winless on the road moving to 4-11 on the year.

The Red Wolves took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Anthony Hecht got caught in a rundown which allowed Taylor Smith to steal home, representing the first run of the game.

UTM evened the score in the top of the third when Cody Terry drove in Trey Karlen on a one-out single to right field.

ASU got back on top 2-1 in the fifth inning when Zach George drove in Dustin Jones on a one-out single to right field.

The Skyhawks retook the lead putting up two runs in the eighth inning, but the Red Wolves used a big eighth inning to retake the lead and shutout UTM in the ninth to take the contest 5-3.

Todd Baumgartner singled up the middle to lead off the inning and tied the game when he was plated by Ryan Emery on an RBI single to left field. Logan Uxa then scored Jordan Castaldo who had reached on an error, to take the lead for ASU. Hecht then reached on a fielder's choice which allowed Emery to score giving the Red Wolves a two-run cushion leading into the final frame.

“Well offensively the game is played for us early in the game and it didn't happen that's why the game was so close the way it was later in the game,” said ASU head coach Tommy Raffo. “Fortunately we had the opportunity one more time in the eighth inning and it finally happened for us but we're not in that situation unless we execute early.”

Smith and Baumgartner led ASU going 2-3 and 2-4 from the plate, respectively. Emery's hit in the eighth also extended his hitting streak to 16-games, which is the longest current streak for the Red Wolves.

Cory Kyle picked up his second win for the Red Wolves pitching 1.1 innings, while allowing no earned runs and striking out one. Wes Patterson gave up two earned runs for the Skyhawks in one inning of relief action, taking the loss for UTM.

ASU opens conference action on Friday traveling to UALR on Friday. First pitch against the Trojans is set for 6 p.m. on Friday.
