ASU Baseball To Hold MLB Scout Day Tuesday

Ninth Inning RBI Single Sends UALR Past ASU, 1-0

LITTLE ROCK (3/19/11) – A ninth inning RBI single by UALR's Greg Garcia, gave the Trojans a 1-0 win over the Arkansas State baseball team in the second game of the three-game Sun Belt Conference opening series Saturday night at Gary Hogan Field.

The win evens the series for the two squads. ASU moved to 10-10 with the loss and 1-1 in league play while UALR improved to 9-9 also with a 1-1 league mark.

Jacob Lee pitched 8.0 scoreless innings striking out five batters and allowing six hits for the Red Wolves. Cory Kyle entered the game in the ninth and gave up just one hit while walking two batters, one intentionally. Garcia then drove in the winning run on a first pitch single which went through the gap out to right field.

Each team was perfect from the field in the contest committing no errors while UALR outhit the Red Wolves 8-6.

Neither starter surrendered an earned run as UALR starter Travis Henke earned the complete game shutout for his first decision of the year.

Todd Baumgartner led the Red Wolves with two hits, going 2-4 from the plate, while Zach George, Jordan Castaldo, Michael George and Logan Uxa each recorded a hit for ASU.

“Obviously you can feel what was happening around the third or fourth what was going on they just didn't give in. When you have neither pitcher giving in like that and there were no breaks, both teams were making plays defensively,” said ASU head coach Tommy Raffo. “They got the chance tonight, we opened the door for them and they did a good job of executing.”

ASU and UALR will conclude it conference opening series on Sunday with a 1 p.m. matchup at Hogan field.
