ULL Edges Red Wolves 10-9 In Series Opener

JONESBORO (3/25/11) – Louisiana-Lafayette scored four runs in the eighth inning and kept the Red Wolves baseball team at bay in the ninth to pick up the Sun Belt Conference series opener, 10-9 at Tomlinson Stadium and Kell Field Friday night.

The Red Wolves moved to 11-12 with a 1-3 league mark while ULL improved to 11-10 with a 2-2 conference ledger.

The Red Wolves took the lead early scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning when Todd Baumgartner drove in Zach George on a one-out double  to left field. Ryan Emery then singled-home Baumgartner to give the Red Wolves a 2-0 lead.

ULL evened things in the top of the second but ASU retook the lead when Michael Faulkner drove in Anthony Hecht on a two-out double to left-center in the bottom of that frame.

Louisiana-Lafayette tied the game in the third and then took the lead in the fifth scoring two runs.

ASU then used a six-run sixth inning to take a 9-5 lead. Michael George hit his first home run of the season driving one over the left-field fence with one out in the sixth. Taylor Smith walked and reached second on a wild pitch. Hecht then doubled-home Taylor and scored when Michael Faulkner singled to left-center. ULL then walked two straight batters, Baumgartner and Castaldo to plate another run for the Red Wolves.

Emery then singled through the right side to score Baumgartner and Faulkner ending the frame ASU up by four.

ASU limited ULL to just one run in the seventh but the Ragin' Cajuns took the lead when Greg Fontenot scored on a sacrifice by Lance Marvel capping off a four-run inning for ULL.

“Well you have got to finish games, you have got to play 27 outs and we have got to complete that part of it. As far as that is concerned there are some little details that we have to get better with,” said ASU head coach Tommy Raffo. “I thought the Louisiana team did a very good job of executing some things and putting some pressure. We have just got to do some things better late in the games and we will, we will get better in that department.“

Faulkner led the Red Wolves at the plate going 3-5 with two RBI. Emery was 2-5 with three RBI for the Red Wolves.

Cory Kyle took the loss for the red Wolves moving to 2-2 on the season while Matt Hicks took the win to improve to 3-1 for the Ragin Cajuns.

ASU and ULL will meet Saturday in a televised contest being broadcast live by CSS from Tomlinson Stadium and Kell Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3:06 p.m.
