Red Wolves Ninth Inning Rally Falls Short At SIU Edwardsville

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (3/29/11) – The Arkansas State baseball team rallied from a two-run deficit in the ninth inning when Anthony Hecht scored after tripling with two outs in the frame, but after loading the bases the Red Wolves were unable to plate the tying run, falling 2-1 to host SIU Edwardsville Tuesday night at the SimmonsCooper Complex.

The loss moves ASU to 12-14 while SIUE improved to 6-15 on the campaign.

ASU outhit the Cougars 7-2, but a pair of errors in the fourth inning gave SIUE a 2-0 lead and ultimately the contest. Michael Faulkner, Todd Baumgartner, Logan Uxa, Thomas Lundborg, Tyler Smith, Zach Maggio and Hecht each recorded one hit for the Red Wolves while Smith was credited with the lone RBI for the game for ASU.

“I like the way we ended the game, obviously we had 13 strikeouts and seven fly balls, that's 19 outs that were pretty easy for the other team,” said ASU head coach Tommy Raffo. “But at the same time I liked what we showed at the end which was positive.”

Cory Kyle pitched four innings for ASU allowing just two runs, which were unearned on one hit while striking out three batters to take the loss moving to 2-3 on the campaign.

John Koch and Brandon Farley each pitched 2.0 scoreless innings to wrap up the contest for A-State, Koch struck out one while Farley struck out three.

James Vazques and Mike Swinnen each had one hit for SIU-E while Spencer Patton struck out 12 taking the win for the Cougars.

ASU gets a second shot at SIU-Edwardsville when they complete the two-game midweek series on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the SimmonsCooper Complex.
