ASU Takes SBC Series With 13-3 Performance In Finale At ULM

MONROE, La. (4/10/11) – The Arkansas State baseball team picked up its first Sun Belt Conference series win of the season using home runs from Jordan Castaldo, Logan Uxa, who had two, and Todd Baumgartner to take a 13-3 win over ULM in the series finale Sunday at Warhawk Field.

The Red Wolves improved to 14-20 with a 4-8 league mark. ULM moved to 17-13 with a 5-7 Sun Belt record.

ASU's Michael Faulkner scored the first run of the game on a throwing error from ULM catcher Joey Cesario after he stole third and made a big head's up play to get the first run of the game in the top of the first.

ULM scored its only three runs of the game in the bottom of the third when Jeremy Sly, Caleb Clowers and Joey Rapp each hit RBI singles to take a 3-1 lead.

In the third, Castaldo drove in Zach George and Baumgartner on a two-out RBI single to tie the game for the Red Wolves, 3-3. Uxa then stepped in and sent the very next pitch over the left field fence for a solo-shot to give ASU a 4-3 lead.

ASU held the game scoreless until they added on nine more insurance runs during the eighth and ninth innings. With two outs in the top of the eighth Baumgartner gave ASU its first hit of the frame when he singled to left field. Castaldo then hammered his first home run of the season over the left field fence to plate Baumgartner putting ASU up 6-3. The very next pitch, Uxa stepped in and sent his second home run of the game over the left-center fence giving ASU a 7-4 advantage.

ASU put up six more runs sending 11 men to the plate in the ninth, highlighted by a three-run home run for Baumgartner and a two-run single for George.

“We answered (in the third) and that was important, we threw up three zeroes right after we scored in other words we didn't let them score and we were able to score after they did,” said ASU head coach Tommy Raffo. “I thought that was huge as far as putting momentum back in our dugout and keeping it there with Jacob on the mound, it feeling good with a one run lead.”

Castaldo went 3-3 with three runs scored and three RBI to lead the Red Wolves. Uxa was 2-5 with three RBI and two runs scored while Tyler smith also went 3-5 with a run scored.

The Red Wolves starting pitcher Jacob Lee went the distance for the Red Wolves pitching nine innings while allowing just five hits and no earned runs while striking out four to improve his record to 3-3 on th season. Kendall Thamm pitched 5.2 innings for ULM taking the loss (0-1).

As a team, ASU put up its largest hit total of the season with 18 while holding ULM to just three runs on five hits and each squad committed just one error.

ASU returns to action on Tuesday and Wednesday in a home and home midweek series against Memphis which begins in Memphis at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
