Red Wolves Come From Behind To Take Out Memphis In 10, 9-8

MEMPHIS (4/12/11) – The Arkansas State baseball team rallied from a four-run deficit scoring five runs over the last three innings to pick up an extra-inning win over Memphis in nonconference midweek action, 9-8, at FedEx Park, Monday.

The Red Wolves improved to 15-20 overall and dropped the Tigers to 19-13 overall.

Memphis took a 4-0 lead scoring one run in the third and three in the fourth before ASU evened the contest by scoring four runs on two outs in the sixth.

Todd Baumgartner doubled down the left-field line to plate Zach Maggio for the Red Wolves first score of the evening. Logan Uxa then singled through the right side to plate Baumgartner. Castaldo and Uxa moved into scoring position on a passed ball before being driven in on a David Bowen single to right field, which evened the score in the sixth.

Memphis retook the lead with a run in the bottom of the frame and stretched its lead to two runs with another run scored in the seventh.

Uxa sacrificed-home Baumgartner in the eighth and Claude Johnson scored on a throwing error by Memphis catcher Phillip Chapman to tie the game and force the extra innings. Johnson had pinch-ran for Brandon Milhouse who picked up his first collegiate hit leading off as a pinch-hitter for the Red Wolves.

ASU took its first lead of the game when Maggio singled-home George in the top of the 10th. Ryan Emery then stretched the ASU lead to three runs when he drove in Faulkner and Johnson on a two-RBI single.

Memphis threatened in the bottom of the frame, scoring two runs when Chad Zurcher, the nation's leading hitter, singled up the middle. The Tigers had runners at the corners with two outs as ASU pitcher Daniel Wright completed the save as Memphis' TJ Rich hit into a ground out to George who had moved over to second.

“Well it's fun to see the guys come through, obviously we have been in this position many times, earlier this year and to see these guys keep fighting and keep battling has been fun,” said ASU head coach Tommy Raffo. “It's good to see some good faces after the game tonight. We had a lot of people contribute tonight, we had guys out of the bullpen, we had guys off the bench, we had guys making plays, we had great at bats, there were some really neat things that happened all the way around for us as a club to score nine runs and to hold probably one of the better hitting clubs in the southeast here in Memphis.”

Cory Kyle took the win for the Red Wolves, pitching 3.2 innings with two strike outs and one earned run. Kyle improved to 3-3 on the season. Ben Paulis fell to 2-1 on the season taking the loss in 1.1 innings of work for Memphis. Wright picked up his first save of the year for A-State.

As a team, Memphis outhit ASU 16-12 but committed two errors while the Red Wolves kept a clean sheet defensively.

Faulkner, Emery, Baumgartner, Uxa and Bowen each had two hits for the Red Wolves with Bowen going 2-3 and Uxa going 2-4, each with two RBI.

ASU tangles with the Tigers again on Wednesday as they complete the midweek home and home series at Tomlinson Stadium and Kell Field. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
