QUICK HITS

A-State won last season's first road contest with a 65-61 victory at Jackson State. Before last season's win, the Red Wolves had lost three straight road openers with the last victory coming in a 73-49 decision at Southeast Missouri State in the 2009-10 season.

The Red Wolves are 0-2 for the first time since the 2011-12 season. That team went 14-20, but advanced to the Sun Belt Conference Tournament semifinals.

The 2014-15 campaign represents the program's 87th season as the Red Wolves have presently amassed a 1,142-1,079 all-time record (.514 win pct.) dating back their inaugural 1926-27 season. A-State has won at least 20 games in a season five times – 1986-87 (21-13), 1987-88 (21-14), 1988-89 (20-10), 1990-91 (23-9) and 1997-98 (20-9) since joining the NCAA-I ranks in 1970-71.

A-State's 19 victories in the 2013-14 season (19-13 record) tied for the second most single-season wins since 1997-98 and also marked a tie for the highest win total in head coach John Brady's A-State coaching career. The Red Wolves went 19-12 overall in 2012-13, which was the program's most wins since 1997-98 (20-9 record). A-State has achieved 17 wins or more in a campaign five of the last six seasons to date and the Red Wolves have posted an 86-74 record (.538) since the 2009-10 season.

A-State has compiled double-digit victories in 16 of the last 18 seasons. The Red Wolves have won at least 15 games or more on 11 occasions, which includes four of the last five seasons to date.

A-State has compiled a 28-61 (.315) record in away contests under head coach John Brady, including a 7-8 (.467) mark a season ago. The Red Wolves went 3-3 in nonconference road contests a year ago. Under Brady, Arkansas State has registered an 18-18 mark in November games and is 8-10 in away games during the month.

Starting with this contest against UCA, the Red Wolves have five of its next seven games on the road. After the matchup with the Bears, A-State plays Belhaven at home on Dec. 6, but doesn't return to the Convocation Center until a Dec. 20 tilt against Marshall.

A-State's next victory will give John Brady his 100th win as the squad's head coach. Brady is currently sitting on 99 wins (99-93 overall record).

A-STATE/CENTRAL ARKANSAS SERIES HISTORY
A-State and Central Arkansas have met 39 times in history with the bulk of the meetings coming before the 1952-53 season. The Red Wolves lost the first meeting in the series in the 1927-28 season, only the school's second year of men's basketball, by a score of 41-24. A-State lost the first four meetings to UCA (known as Arkansas Teachers College at the time), but grabbed its first victory in the second of two meetings during the 1929-30 season in a very close game by a score of 30-27.

Arkansas State swept both season's meetings for the first time in the 1931-32 season by scores of 32-31 and 38-24 and the two teams played each other on and off until the 1952-53 season. A-State took the meeting in that season by a score of 102-92 to tie the overall series at 18-18, but the Bears and Red Wolves didn't meet again until 2011-12 season.

Since the series has resumed, A-State has won all three meetings. A-State topped UCA 71-64 at the Convocation Center in the 2011-12 season and defeated the Bears in Conway 73-72 in the 2012-13 campaign when Cameron Golden hit a three-pointer with 4.8 seconds left to give A-State the win. Last season, the Red Wolves defeated UCA 99-56 at home and have won four straight overall in the series.

In last season's 99-56 win, five Red Wolves scored in double-figures, while every player that played except for Cameron Golden scored in the contest. A-State outrebounded UCA 48-26, including posting 16 offensive rebounds to seven for the Bears. Additionally, A-State outshot UCA by a mark of 49.2 percent to 35 percent. Lennell Brown led Central Arkansas with 12 points. The win brought John Brady to 3-0 against UCA overall, with all three meetings coming as A-State's head coach.

LAST TIME OUT
Arkansas State fell to 0-2 on the season after losing a close game to Lamar, one of UCA's Southland Conference foes, by a score of 63-58. The Red Wolves and Cardinals played to an even 35-35 after one half, but Lamar built a seven-point lead of 46-39 early in the second half. A-State got within three on two occasions late in the contest, but couldn't score as Lamar went on to win 63-58.

Anthony Livingston led all scorers with 16 points and was one rebound shy of a double-double, while Golden and Gardner scored 13 and 11, respectively. Nouhoum Bocoum chipped in with six points and seven rebounds off the bench and Golden dished out a team-high four assists. A-State shot 41.3 percent from the floor to Lamar's 45.3, but Lamar outshot the Red Wolves 43.5 percent to 31.6 in the second half.

The loss to the Cardinals was A-State's first loss in the series since the 2011-12 season when A-State dropped a 65-62 decision in Beaumont, Texas. The Red Wolves defeated Lamar 93-53 at home in the 2012-13 season, before winning last season's meeting 95-89 on the road.

SCOUTING CENTRAL ARKANSAS
Central Arkansas enters the contest with an 0-6 mark, including an 0-5 mark on the road. UCA lost its only game in the Farris Center this season by a score of 74-68 to Southeast Missouri, but went 0-3 in the state of Nebraska before that game by falling to Creighton (104-77), Nebraska-Omaha (100-75), and the University of Nebraska (82-56). Within the past week, the Bears have dropped road contests at Charleston Southern (80-67) and UALR (85-71).

In their latest contest against UALR, the Bears trailed 47-37 at halftime, but were only outscored 38-34 in the second half. The Trojans outrebounded the Bears by a count of 32-27 and shot 54.5 percent from the field, compared to UCA's 47.3 percent. UCA had three players tally double-figures, including Mike Martin and Jordan Howard recording 21 and 20 points, respectively.

This season, Jordan Howard is the leading scorer for Central Arkansas, averaging 17 points a game. Mike Martin (11.8) and Jake Zuilhof (10.2) are also averaging double-digits for the Bears. Zuilhof is the leading rebounder by averaging 5.2. UCA is coached by Russ Pennell, who played at Central Arkansas from 1982- 84. He has been interim head coach at Arizona and coached Grand Canyon University, compiling an 112-79 record.

Living-strong: Sophomore forward Anthony Livingston had little problems adjusting to Division I basketball after transferring from San Jacinto Junior College. He scored a team-high 26 points (19 in the first half) in the season-opening loss to UTM and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. He followed that performance up with a 16-point, nine-rebound performance against Lamar last Tuesday. He also added a team-high two blocks and two assists against the Cardinals. Livingston is averaging a team-high 21 points a game and team-high nine rebounds a contest.

Doubling Up: A-State had three players in double-figures against UT Martin with Anthony Livingston's 26 being the most points scored in a season-opener in the John Brady era. Cameron Golden scored 17 and Sean Gardner added 15 of his own against the Skyhawks. Those same three proved to provide the bulk of A-State's scoring with Livingston contributing 16 points to lead the way against Lamar. Golden scored 13 and Gardner scored 11 in last Tuesday's loss to Lamar.

Nouhoum, No Problem: Junior center Nouhoum Bocoum came off the bench to provide a spark for the Red Wolves in last Tuesday's game against Lamar. The Harlem, N.Y., native tallied six points and had the second most rebounds on the team with seven in only 12 minutes of action. The six points off the bench for the big man were a welcome site to an A-State squad that didn't register any bench points in its season-opening loss.

What's Returning: A-State returns three players from the 2013-14 team in juniors Cameron Golden, Kelvin Downs, and Josh Pierre as the Red Wolves' top five scoring leaders graduated. The trio combined to account for 13.4 percent (325-2,432) of the Red Wolves' scoring output from a season ago. Golden returns as A-State's leader in scoring (7.6 ppg.), rebounding (2.5), assists (2.5), and steals (1.1).

New Assistants: Carlos Wilson and Mike Scutero will begin their first season at A-State in 2014-15 as assistants on head coach John Brady's staff. Wilson previously was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Odessa (Texas) College while Scutero spent the 2013-14 season as an assistant at Kennesaw (Ga.) State. Prior to KSU, Scutero was an assistant to the head coach (Kermit Davis) and director of basketball operations at Middle Tennessee State from 2010-13.

Ready To Play: Guards PJ Hardwick and Sean Gardner are both eligible for competition this 2014-15 season after not playing in the 2013-14 campaign. Hardwick, a transfer from North Texas, sat out due to the NCAA Division I Transfer Rule while Gardner was redshirted after signing with the Red Wolves prior to the 2013-14 season. Hardwick, who started in 17 of UNT's 32 games for the 2012-13 season, scored a team seventh-best 3.7 points (118 pts.) and 2.9 rebounds (92 rebs.) while averaging 23.7 minutes per contest (758 total). Gardner compiled per game averages of 10.7 points (320 pts.), 3.6 rebounds (108 rebs.), and 3.0 assists (89 ast.) in 30 2012-13 outings at Motlow Community College, coached by former A-State men's basketball player Jerry Nichols (2005-06).

Productive Helper: Cameron Golden's team-leading 81 assists in 32 appearances last season represented a personal single-season best, bettering his 65 assists in 31 games for the 2012-13 campaign. Golden set personal season highs in points (244), steals (36), field goals made (81), free throws made (39), minutes played (768), and games played (32) this past 2013-14 season.

Did You Know?: Junior forwards Ronnie White and Nouhoum Bocoum were teammates at Paris (Texas) Junior College this past 2013-14 season ... Sophomore guard Daijon Macklien played football at NCAA Divsiion I North Alabama in the 2012 season ... Sean Gardner and junior forward Charles Waters are stepbrothers Nouhoum Bocoum wears size 18 shoes ... Cameron Golden has switched his jersey number to one for this upcoming season after wearing zero this past 2013-14 campaign.

Among The Best: Arkansas State was one of the nation's top three-point shooting teams in the 2013-14 season as the Red Wolves ranked 12th among the final NCAA Division I leaders in three-point field goals per game (8.8), 22nd in three-point field goals made (282), 36th in three-point field goal attempts (737), and 40th in three-point field goal percentage (38.3 percent).

Scoring Machine: A-State's 2,432 points scored in the 2013-14 season is a program all-time best, surpassing the 2,392 points set by the 2006-07 team. The Red Wolves averaged 76.0 points a contest in 32 games, which represented the program's highest scoring average since the 2004-05 team scored an average of 76.1 points per game (2,207 pts.) in 29 outings.

Close Ties: Guard Josh Pierre's father, Butch, will embark on his seventh season as the associate men's basketball head coach at Oklahoma State University. Butch spent 11 seasons (1997-08) at LSU as a member of current A-State head coach John Brady's staff, including six as an associate head coach. Josh has a twin brother, Joseph III. Pierre doubled his points production last season by tallying 12 points in eight games after netting six points in four appearances for the 2012-13 campaign.
