QUICK HITS
A-State rallied from a nine point deficit in the second half and outscored Texas State 12-7 in overtime to pick up a 78-73 Sun Belt Conference victory on Saturday at the Convocation Center.
The Red Wolves play 11 games in the month of January, the most since A-State had 11 games in the 1986-87 season.
The 2014-15 campaign represents the program's 87th season as the Red Wolves have presently amassed a 1,150-1,085 all-time record (.515 win pct.) dating back their inaugural 1926-27 season. A-State has won at least 20 games in a season five times – 1986-87 (21-13), 1987-88 (21-14), 1988-89 (20-10), 1990-91 (23-9) and 1997-98 (20-9) since joining the NCAA-I ranks in 1970-71.
A-State has amassed a record of 199-194 (.506) since joining the Sun Belt Conference in the 1991-92 season. With Saturday's win, A-State is now 129-65 (.665) in home SBC games while the road record sits at 70-128 (.354).
The Red Wolves improved to 8-1 on the season when pulling down 35-plus rebounds as A-State out-rebounded Texas State 41-39 on Saturday. A-State is 7-2 when attempting fewer three-pointers in the second half compared to the first half and 7-2 when shooting a better field goal percentage than their opposition.
Anthony Livingston posted his seventh double-double as he had a game-high 24 points and 15 rebounds against Texas State. Cameron Golden poured in 22 points, his second-straight game with 20-plus points. Nouhoum Bocoum added 14 points of the bench to tie his career high.
A-STATE/GEORGIA STATE SERIES HISTORY
Arkansas State and Georgia State resume the conference series with the Panthers holding a 4-1 edge in five previous meetings.
Coming off a four overtime thriller in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament last year, A-State was defeated by Georgia State 72-45 in the last meeting. In the Sun Belt Conference semifinal matchup, Kendrick Washington led the Red Wolves with 12 points and 12 boards. Melvin Johnson III scored 10 points to go along with six rebounds. Georgia State shot 50 percent (26-52) in the game and the Panthers were 70 percent (14-20) from the charity stripe. A-State finished 32 percent (17-53) from the field and 43 percent (6-14) at the free throw line.
Georgia State won both regular season meetings last year, including a 79-76 overtime defeat of A-State at the Convocation Center. The Red Wolves held a three-point lead with just over a minute left, but Melvin Johnson III hit a game-tying three-pointer to send the game to overtime. A-State had four players finish in double figures in the contest. Melvin Johnson III led with 19 points while Kirk Van Slyke totaled 18 points. Cameron Golden and Brandon Reed each tallied 13 points. The Panters edged the Red Wolves 73-72 in Atlanta last year. Cameron Golden missed the mark with three seconds left and a layup by Brandon Reed rimmed out as Georgia state held off A-State. Kirk Van Slyke led the Red Wolves with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Kendrick Washington finished with 12 points and nine rebounds while Golden finished with 10 points.
Georgia State and Arkansas State met 10 days apart in the 1995-96 campaign with the road team winning each matchup. The Panthers took the first meeting (Dec. 9, 1995) by a score of 72-57, but A-State got revenge with a 74-67 win in Atlanta on Dec. 19, 1995.
LAST TIME OUT
A-State rallied from nine points down in the second half and outscored Texas State 12-7 in overtime to pick up a 78-73 Sun Belt Conference victory Saturday night at the Convocation Center.
Sophomore forward Anthony Livingston scored 24 points and hauled in 15 rebounds, both game highs, to lead A-State (8-8, 3-4) to its second straight victory. Junior guard Cameron Golden added 22 points, including 13 in the second half and overtime periods combined, to help the Red Wolves collect their third home win of the season.
Texas State (10-6, 4-3) scored the first bucket of the second half to take a 35-26 advantage, but the Red Wolves went on a 10-0 run over the next four minutes to take their first lead since the game's opening minutes. The remainder of the second half featured 10 lead changes and six ties as neither team led by more than four points.
With the score tied 60-60 at the 3:03 mark, the final minutes of regulation were a back-and-forth battle. A-State went up two on a Golden layup, but the Bobcats answered with a three by Wes Davis on their next possession. Livingston followed with a three that put A-State back on top 65-63 with 1:05 left, and he then made 1-of-2 free throws with 21 seconds remaining to make the Red Wolves' lead three. However, Davis made another three with nine seconds left on the clock to tie the game at 66-66. A-State had a couple of opportunities in the final seconds, but a missed layup and short put-back attempt fell off the mark as time expired.
A-State scored the first six overtime points on a pair of Golden free throws, a Livingston layup and two more free throws by junior forward Charles Waters. Texas State's Emani Gant had the answer as they hit a three on two of their next three possessions to tie the game once again. Livingston put the Red Wolves back on top for good when he made a layup with 36 seconds left. The shot gave A-State a 74-72 lead.
SCOUTING GEORGIA STATE
Georgia State, the defending Sun Belt Conference champions, enters Monday's game with an 11-7 overall record and a 4-3 mark in league play. The Panthers suffered a 74-69 setback at Appalachian State on Saturday after defeating UT Arlington 83-62 on their home floor on Thursday night.
The Panthers are 7-1 on their home floor this season, but just 2-6 on the road including 0-2 in conference play.
Georgia State has two players, Ryan Harrow (20.4) and R.J. Hunter (20.1), averaging 20-plus points per game. Harrow and Hunter rank second and third, respectively, in league scoring average. The duo combines to average 40.5 PPG, tied for the third-most of any duo in the country. Hunter needs 24 points to break the Panthers career scoring record.
The Panthers average 73.9 PPG to rank second among Sun Belt Conference teams. Defensively, Georgia State ranks fourth allowing 66.4 PPG. The Panthers lead the league in field goal percentage shooting 49 percent from the field. Georgia State also leads the league in steals, snagging 9.4 per game, and assist to turnover ratio with an average of 14.4 assists and 10.9 turnovers per game.
Ron Hunter is in his fourth season at Georgia State with an impressive record of 73-44. In 21 seasons as a head coach, Hunter has a 347-263 record. Ron Hunter played collegiately at Miami (Ohio) and helped the Redhawks compile an 81-30 record during his four-year career, including three appearances at the NCAA Tournament.

A-State has hauled in 41 rebounds in the last two games to improve to 8-1 on the season when pulling down 35 or more rebounds. The lone loss in which the Red Wolves reached 35-plus rebounds was a 73-65 setback at Toledo
The Red Wolves are 7-2 on the season when having fewer three-point attempts in the second half than in the first half. A-State was 1-9 in first half against Texas State on Saturday, but 4-8 in the second half. Further, in the nine games in which A-State has fewer three-point attempts in the second half, the Red Wolves have outscored their opponents 309-258 in the second half alone. In the first half of those games, A-State has been outscored 303-265.
The Red Wolves are 7-3 when 25 or more of their points are inside the painted area. A-State is 7-5 this season when Anthony Livingston attempts 10 or more shots, but 1-3 when he is unable to reach 10 field goal attempts.
Extra Time
A-State is 2-0 in overtime this season, both wins coming in league play against South Alabama and Texas State. The Red Wolves are 8-9 in overtime games under head coach John Brady.
The Red Wolves have won three-straight games in overtime dating back to the four overtime thriller against UALR in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament last year. A-State's last overtime loss came at the hands of Georgia State on March 4 at the Convocation Center.
Sun Belt Conference Games
The Red Wolves are 199-194 (.506) since joining the Sun Belt Conference (SBC) in the 1991-92 season, which includes a season-best 14-4 (.778) mark in the 1997-98 campaign. A-State sports a 129-65 (.665) record at home and is 70-128 (.354) on the road in Sun Belt action.
ASU head coach John Brady has registered a 58-55 (.513) record in Sun Belt Conference contests since his arrival in the 2008-09 season, which consists of a 40-15 (.727) home ledger and a 18-40 (.310) away mark.
A-State In January Games
The Red Wolves have started the new calendar year with an 2-4 mark and are in the midst of a tough January slate. Dating back to the 2010-11 season, the Red Wolves are 15-7 at home and 4-14 in January road games.
A-State has a total of 11 games this month, the most in the month of January since the 1986-87 season. The 1982-83 schedule had the most January games, with A-State going 8-5 in 13 games. Since the 2000-01 season, the Red Wolves have a record of 63-59 (.516) in January outings. A-State is 43-20 (.694) at home and 20-39 (.339) on the road in that span of January contests. Under head coach John Brady, A-State is 31-26 (.544) in January games, 23-8 (.742) at home and 8-18 (.308) on the road.

A-State averages 13 free throw makes a game this year, shooting 71 percent from the charity stripe (209-294). The Red Wolves sport a 7-4 record when making 12 or more free throws in a game.
Logging Big Minutes
Cameron Golden, Anthony Livingston, and Sean Gardner are all in the top-five in minutes played in the Sun Belt Conference and top-75 in the nation. Golden is second in the SBC averaging 36.4 minutes per game and 27th nationally. Livingston, who played 44 of 45 minutes on Saturday, ranks fourth (35.7) in the SBC and 45th nationally while Gardner is fifth (35.1) in the SBC and 66th nationally.
Tough Slate
The Red Wolves have five games against SBC opponents after they come off a bye date in conference play, the most in the conference. Appalachian State had a bye on the first conference date before their game with A-State (Jan. 3) and ULM (Jan. 5/Feb. 21) has byes before both of its matchups with the Red Wolves. Georgia Southern (Jan. 8) was the third-straight opponent coming off a bye to take on A-State. The Red Wolves also take on South Alabama in Jonesboro on March 5th after the Jaguars have February 28th off.
Louisiana-Lafayette also has five opponents on their league schedule after the foe has a bye week. The Ragin' Cajuns play all five of their opponents coming off a bye in consecutive games.
The Red Wolves are in the midst of a stretch of three games against teams in the top four of the conference. Texas State was second in the leauge standings entering Saturday's game and A-State plays third-place Georgia State on Monday before travelling to face UL Lafayette who is tied for second.
