Lady Red Wolves Classic Golf Tournament Set to Begin Monday

JONESBORO, Ark. (10/15/17) – The Arkansas State women's golf team is set to host its annual home tournament, the Lady Red Wolves Classic, Oct. 16-17 at Sage Meadows Country Club.

The 54-hole tournament will include two rounds of competition Monday and one Tuesday, both days beginning with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. The field will feature four teams, including a pair of A-State squads, Belmont and William Woods University. Three individuals will also be competing for Redlands Community College.

“Our entire team had a great practice week at Sage Meadows, and I feel very good about all nine of our players competing well,” said A-State head coach M.J. Desbiens Shaw. “We have a lot of depth on our team this year, and hopefully we can show it this week. It's also very exciting to have parents and fans coming out to watch, so it will be great for our seniors to play their last home event. We are looking forward to seeing the community come out and support our Red Wolves."

A-State saw its two competing teams at last year's tournament finish second and third among eight teams. UTEP claimed the championship last season, one year after the Red Wolves collected the tournament title. A-State has picked up the Lady Red Wolves Classic championship four of the last seven years.

Arkansas State will be competing in its fourth tournament of the season. While the team finished sixth in its last tournament, the Xavier Invitational, it collected a season-best third place at the ORU Shootout its prior time out.

Participating for A-State's “Black” team will be seniors Sarah Childers and Emma Miller, juniors Beth Ann Compton and Aracelly Jimenez Rios and sophomore Grayson Gladden.

Compton leads the squad with a 74.7 stroke average and has posted a top-15 finish in all three tournaments this season. She is followed by Jimenez Rios with a 76.7 average and Childers ranks third on the team with a 77.7 average. Miller placed a season-best 19th her last time out at the ORU Shootout, while Gladden has played in all three A-State outing this year and has one top-10 showing to her credit.

Competing for Arkansas State's “Red” team are senior Kirsten Garner, sophomores Marisa Marquez and Monica Lieving and freshman Maria Jose Atristain Vega.

While Garner and Lieving will be playing in their first tournament this season, Marquez and Atristain Vega have seen a combined nine rounds of action.
