JONESBORO, Ark. (10/12/20) – Following a 216-day break between competitions, the Arkansas State men's golf team posted a program record low round and holds a commanding lead after 36 holes of the Bubba Barnett Intercollegiate at RidgePointe Country Club.
The Red Wolves combined for a 19-under par 269 in the first round to set a program record low round and Bubba Barnett Intercollegiate record. The previous program record was 270 set at the Border Olympics in the 2018-19 season while the Bubba Barnett Intercollegiate record for low round was set last year with a total of 274. A-State totaled a second round 273 (-14) to post a two-round total of 542 (-32) to hold a 23-stroke advantage over second place Texas State (565).
Individually, A-State has the top five individuals and all nine Red Wolves are inside the top-25 of the 63-player field. Julien Sale recorded three eagles over 36 holes and holds the individual lead at 9-under 135 after a first round 69 (-3) and second round 66 (-6). Zan Luka Stirn is one stroke behind Sale for second with a two-round total of 136 (-4) while Adam Thorp and Luka Naglic are 6-under (138). Naglic had the low round of the day with a 7-under par 65 in the first round, a career low round and tied for the fourth-lowest individual round in program history. Jack Madden is tied for 24th with a two-round total of 149 (+5).
Connor Wilson is tied for 11th at 1-under 143 with Devyn Pappas tied for 13th at even-par 144. Michael Weppernig carded a total of 148 (+4) for the 36 holes to enter the final round in 23rd. Wilson, Pappas and Weppernig are playing the tournament as individuals.
The third and final round of the Bubba Barnett Intercollegiate begins at 7:30 Tuesday with tee times off No. 1 and No. 10 tees.
