PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. (9/11/23) – Following a 6-under par 66 to open the season Sunday, Arkansas State men's golfer Thomas Schmidt carded an 8-under par 64 to total a program record 36-hole total of 14-under par 130 to lead the Golfweek Fall Challenge played at True Blue Golf Club.
Entering the final round Tuesday, Schmidt holds a two-stroke lead on the 80-player field. His second round 8-under par 64 is the second-lowest round in program history while his 36-hole total of 14-under par 130 breaks the previous program record of 12-under par 132 held by Matthew Cole since 2019. Schmidt posted a clean round with six birdies and an eagle on the par-5 10th.
Led by Schmidt, A-State stands fourth among 14 teams at 28-under par (548), five strokes behind Washington State for the team lead. Western Carolina and Loyola Marymount are tied for second, three strokes ahead of the Red Wolves at 31-under par. A-State's 28-under par total through 36 holes is the third-lowest in program history and best since the 2020 Bubba Barnett Intercollegiate (-34). The Red Wolves have back-to-back rounds of 14-under par 274 to open the season.
Chris Somerfield posted a second consecutive round of 4-under par 68 and is ninth individually. Pierce Johnson was 1-under for the second round and is tied for 22nd at 4-under par for the event. Anthony De Schutter was also 1-under Monday is tied for 43rd at 1-under par for the tournament while Jack Maxey is even-par overall after a 1-over par 73. Devyn Pappas was 5-over par after the first five holes Monday, but an eagle on the ninth jumpstarted a 1-under finish to place him tied for 61st with a total of 2-over par 146.
A-State begins the final round Tuesday at 7:15 a.m. (CT) off the first tee paired with Coastal Carolina and Richmond. Live scoring is available at Golfstat.com.
