JONESBORO, Ark. (1/20/24) – Stephen F. Austin won a tiebreak to clinch the doubles point and went on to defeat the Arkansas State women's tennis team 4-3 Saturday at the Trim Gym.
Stephen F. Austin (1-0) took the doubles point by way of a tiebreak on court one to lead the match 1-0. The pair of Rebecca Brody and Ariadna Fernandez fell 6-3 on court three, but Sarah Millard and Abigail Thurmer picked up a 6-3 decision on court two. Nejla Zukic and Yasmine Humbert had match point, but SFA forced the tiebreak and went on to clinch the point 7-6 (7-0).
SFA clinched the match with singles wins on courts one, two and three. Brody came up short to Ksenia Mamontova 6-2, 6-1 and Zukic dropped her match on court three against Jemma Cave 6-2, 6-1. Millard forced a decisive third set, but Felicia Back edged her on court two 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 to clinch the match. Humbert got A-State (1-1) on the board with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Alkmini Giannakogiorgou on court four. Fernandez made it 4-2 with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 triumph against Avery Kinsey on court five.
The Red Wolves head to Springfield, Mo., to take on Missouri State and Oral Roberts next weekend. A-State meets Missouri State Friday at 11:00 a.m. and Oral Roberts on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Following the road trip, the Red Wolves play four consecutive home matches, beginning with a February 2 matchup against Lindenwood at RidgePointe Country Club. Emiliya Margolin played on court six and rallied back from an early deficit for a 5-7, 6-2, 10-8 victory to set the final margin.
A-State returns to action next weekend in Springfield, Mo., against Missouri State and Oral Roberts. The Red Wolves meet Missouri State on Friday at 11:00 a.m. and face Oral Roberts Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
