JONESBORO, Ark. (3/23/24) – Playing its Sun Belt Conference home opener Saturday, the Arkansas State women's tennis team fell to Marshall 5-2 at the A-State Tennis Courts.
Marshall (12-6, 3-1 Sun Belt) won the doubles point with a tiebreaker on court one to take the early lead over A-State (7-7, 1-2 Sun Belt). Anna Grigoreva and Abigail fell 6-4 on court two, but Nejla Zukic and Rebecca Brody evened doubles play with a 7-5 win on court three. Yasmine Humbert and Sarah Millard were locked in a back-and-forth battle that went to a tiebreaker that was on 7-5 by Marshall to clinch the point.
The Thundering Herd lead grew to 3-0 with singles wins on court three and four, but Ariadna Fernandez got the Red Wolves on the board with a win on court six. Zukic came up short against Doroteja Joksovic 6-1, 6-1 on court three and Millard was dealt a 6-0, 6-4 setback on court four against Sophia Hurrion. Fernandez won in straight sets on court six, 6-4, 6-3, against Aisling McGrane. Marshall clinched the match with Johanna Strom topping Humbert 6-4, 6-3 on court one. Playing out remaining matches, Grigoreva defeated Emma Vanderheyden 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-2 while Brody fell 6-2, 4-6, 4-6 against Rieke Gillar.
A-State returns to action Sunday against Appalachian State. First serve is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. at the A-State Tennis Courts. Admission is FREE.
