TROY, Ala. (4/14/24) – Playing its final road match of the season, the Arkansas State tennis team was handed a 7-0 defeat at Troy Sunday.
A-State (7-14, 1-9 Sun Belt) drops its eighth-straight match. Troy improved to 14-6 overall and 8-2 in league play.
The Red Wolves got behind early with Troy taking the doubles point. Yasmine Humbert and Sarah Millard suffered a 6-3 setback on court one and the Trojans clinched the point with Nejla Zukic and Rebecca Brody coming up short 6-4 on court three. Abigail Thurmer and Anna Grigoreva were locked in a 6-6 tiebreak when the point was decided.
Troy grabbed a 2-0 advantage with Emiliya Margolin dealt a 6-2, 6-0 loss on court six against Gabrielle Leslie. Thurmer fell 6-0, 6-0 on court five against Leena Metwally to make it 3-0 and the Trojans finished off the win with Maria Guirguis topping Millard 6-1, 6-4 on court three. Remaining matches were played out with Humbert battling to a 6-3, 7-5 setback on court one, Ariadna Fernandez coming up short in a fight on court four 7-5, 6-3 and Grigoreva going to a third-set tiebreak on court three 7-5, 6-7 (5), 7-10.
A-State hosts Senior Day Saturday at 10 a.m. against Southern Miss. Brody, Humbert and Zukic will be honored between the doubles and single matches. A free clinic will be conducted ahead of the match beginning at 9 a.m. and free pizza will also be available to fans.
