JONESBORO, Ark. (5/7/24) – Arkansas State baseball (21-26-1, 7-16-1 SBC) took advantage of an error in the seventh to down Memphis (21-28, 8-13 AAC) by a score of 7-4 on Tuesday night at Tomlinson Stadium.
Jelle van der Lelie made his 11
th start, surrendering two runs on three hits while striking out one over 2.0 innings pitched.
Austen Jaslove led the bats for A-State, going 2-for-4 at the plate with four RBIs and a home run.
Jacob Compton opened the scoring for Memphis in the opening frame, landing a shot in left center to take a one run advantage. Alex Fernandes added another run in the second after doubling down the left-field line, making the score 2-0.
Jaslove spearheaded the Red Wolves' response with a three-run blast over the wall in left field. It was the third baseman's first homer since he recorded two against Lindenwood on February 24.
Allen Grier knocked in another run on a sacrifice fly to right, capping off a four-run inning that put A-State ahead 4-2.
The Tigers continued to chip away at the lead with Jonah Sutton advancing home before Austin Baskin was caught stealing in the fifth. Compton brought in another run after hitting a sacrifice fly down the right field line, tying the game at four runs apiece.
An error on a dropped fly ball allowed A-State to score two runs while
Hunter Ryan made it to third base. Jaslove added another with a single through the right side as the Red Wolves took a 7-4 advantage into the eighth.
The Scarlet and Black were able to keep Memphis off the board in the next two innings to secure a win in the non-conference finale.
Arlon Butts (3-1) earned the win and
Blaine Harpenau (4) claimed the save while Brandon Chorzelewski (0-2) took the loss.
