OXFORD, Miss. (1/19/25) – Anna Grigoreva picked up a singles win at the No. 1 position, but the Arkansas State women's tennis team ultimately dropped a 4-1 decision at Ole Miss Sunday afternoon inside the William F. Gaultney Indoor Tennis Facility.
A-State (3-2) broke a 2-0 shutout with the sophomore's win, but the Rebels (2-0) would follow with wins at No. 2 and No. 5 to clinch the match.
"We were upset that we did not play doubles with belief and conviction," Grigoreva said. "But after doubles, (Coach Sujay Lama) challenged us to fight and believe. We responded by putting ourselves in a position to win our singles matches. I'm glad that I won my match and I'm very happy to get back competing and start our spring season. I'm so proud of my teammates and how we battled, and I can't wait for our next match."
Ole Miss claimed the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and 2 spots. Grigoreva and Carla Muro Castellvi dropping a 6-0 match to the No. 1 Rebel duo of Ludmila Kareisova and Anaelle Leclercq, while Lily Cvanciger and Abigail Thurmer fell 6-1 to Rachel Krzyzak and Brooklyn Olson.
The hosts moved to a 2-0 lead when 83rd-ranked Kareisova topped A-State's Sarah Millard 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. Grigoreva then put the Scarlet and Black on the board with her 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Leclercq.
Lucie Pretruzelova defeated A-State freshman Lily Cvanciger 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 to make it 3-1, and then Ole Miss clinched the match when Krzyzak won a 7-6, 6-1 decision over Muro Castellvi at No. 5. Muro Castellvi led 5-2 in the first set before Krzyzak rallied to force the tiebreak.
Hanmare McAslin held a 4-2 lead in the second set over Emma Kette, but the match went unfinished, while Loles Carbo Chova owned a one-set advantage over Andrea Nova when the contest ended and was serving at 30-love, 4-5, in the second frame.
