MOBILE, Ala. (11/7/25) – Arkansas State volleyball (16-8, 9-4 SBC) closed in on forcing a fifth set at South Alabama (13-10, 8-4 SBC), but a late surge ended hopes of a rally in a 3-1 (19-25, 24-26, 25-18, 20-25) defeat on Friday night at The Mitchell Center.
Addison Collum led the team with 13 kills on a .462 attack percentage, while
Daedrianna Cail posted eight kills alongside a team-high nine blocks. As a team, the Red Wolves tallied 46 kills and a service ace on a .158 percent clip plus 58 digs and 15 blocks on the defensive side.
A-State surrendered 11 of the first 14 rallies, but back-to-back attack errors by the Jaguars allowed the Red Wolves to close the gap. A kill from Collum paired with block assists for
Haley Glunz and
Kaitlin Whitlock made the score 14-10, but the opposition added six of the next 10 points to their total to stall momentum.
The Red Wolves cut the deficit to four after taking back-to-back rallies with match point on the line, but it would not be enough as the Jaguars took a 25-20 decision.
Cail and Whitlock landed six kills apiece to help establish a 10-7 lead, but a 3-0 run for South Alabama tied the set at 10-10. After evenly exchanging the next 12 rallies, A-State fell behind 19-17 before kills from Glunz and Whitlock paired with an attack error created a one-point advantage.
The Jaguars claimed the next three rallies, but the Red Wolves tied the set at 23-23 before going into extra points. The opposition claimed the final two rallies on kills, putting A-State behind 2-0 in the match.
Trailing 14-13 in the third set, Cail sparked a 5-0 run with a kill that was followed by an attack error plus three consecutive kills from Collum (2) and Glunz (1). The next two rallies were won by the opposition, but
Devyn Lewis and Payton Van Veen matched the total with a pair of kills.
A 4-0 run highlighted by kills from Lewis and Whitlock set up match point for A-State, and an attack error secured the set via a 25-18 score.
The Scarlet and Black moved ahead 8-4 early in the fourth set, but a 6-2 run for South Alabama tied it at 10-10. Neither side gained an advantage larger than two points until the opposition won three consecutive rallies and opened a 22-18 lead.
Cail and Collum added two kills beyond that point, but it would not be enough as A-State fell in the opening matchup of the weekend.
